What are Probiotics?
Both people and animals alike have natural microbes or “flora” that naturally live on the lining of their intestines. These are beneficial types of bacterias and yeasts that help digest and absorb nutrients from food. Keeping a healthy balance of good bacteria in the gut is not only important for proper digestion but also for the immune system.
Sometimes beneficial bacteria are damaged or destroyed or diminished. Common reasons include medications, poor diet, disease, or stress. This can also cause your dog’s stomach upset and a general decline in digestive health.
Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that help support gut health and may benefit dogs with gastrointestinal disturbances. Like all dietary supplements, it is best to consult with your veterinarian first to determine if the product best suits your dog’s needs.

Will buy this probiotic again! Submitted By Harold Verified BuyerOur Senior furbaby had GI issues before we used this probiotic. It helped him a lot. Great product! It’s definitely improved my dogs GI issues! Submitted By Tiffany Verified BuyerWe give this to Ren for GI issues that were so bad and caused her liver values to be really high, which caused doctors to think she was in liver failure. An Internal Specialist determined it wasn’t liver failure and recommended we put her on this along with some other meds to help her. So far she is throwing up less and doing great! Sally-Anne’s Health Has Improved Submitted By Carol Verified BuyerSally-Anne receives this probiotic capsule sprinkled and then mixed into her cat food daily. Sally-Anne was diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease just this past May. She will be 17 years old in September. Visbiome was prescribed by her internal veterinarian for gut health. This daily med helps Sally-Anne’s digestive system so much; I am so thankful that this med exists for my sweet little girl. I would buy this product again and again Submitted By Fabienne Verified Buyer I highly recommend this product. Over the years I have used really high-quality probiotic, however, my holistic vet recommended Visbiome for my babies and I am glad I am doing so. Visbiome needs to be refrigerated, which means that the properties of the product are not destroyed over time. Refrigeration helps enhance the overall shelf life of the product, which is in contrast to probiotics that do not need refrigeration.

Reviews for Visbiome Vet
Helped cure stomach upset caused by steroids. Submitted By Caitlyn Verified Buyer
This probiotic has drastically improved our dogs health. He has to take steroids for a disease called ITP. It’s a life threatening disease and the steroids are our only choice. The steroids cause stomach upset and Visbiome has completely helped eradicate the problem. Otter, our blue heeler, is on a strict fresh diet from Farmers Dog (which I also highly recommend) and combined with Visbiome we have a healthy dog!
I highly recommend this Probiotic Submitted By Kathleen Verified Buyer
My dog has ulcerative colitis and Visbiome Vet Probiotic for Dogs has helped significantly! Within days of starting his regimen, he felt better, his appetite was back and was ready for play again! We tried other probiotics first and no others helped him like Visbiome. It is expensive if you have a large breed dog due to dosing, but it truly works!
Awesome product. Submitted By Julia Verified Buyer

The only probiotic that has worked! Submitted By Trudy Verified Buyer
Our dog had stomach issues for over a year….stomach gurgling, fluctuating, lack of appetite (change in food didn’t help nor did the typical probiotics) also had reoccurring soft stools. We finally took him to a holistic vet who prescribed a new probiotic that had never been mentioned to us – Visbiome Vet Probiotic. Within three weeks he was a completely normal dog! It has been three months now and he remains on Visbiome very healthy and at a perfect weight.
I highly recommend this product! Submitted By Michelle Verified Buyer
Our poor Norfolk Terrier has had IBD since he was a puppy. He is on a special diet and had been using another probiotic until our new Veterinarian suggested this product. What a difference this had made in his life! The terrible belly pain and gas he suffered is gone. This has just changed his whole life and we could not be happier.
yes will be reordering as its extremely convenient Submitted By John Verified Buyer
I needed to start my female dog on probiotic after her being diagnosed with bone cancer, which resulted in amputation of her back right leg and immediately started on chemo treatments (18 wks). Other than the vet (45 miles away) I could not find this medication, so I look and found you guys. Ordered the product and got it within a few days so she didn’t have to miss any treatment days. Finding the exact match and getting it so quickly was GREAT.
Healthy digestion is essential for your dog to be able to use nutrients from their food and obtain energy. Gastrointestinal (GI) diseases affect a dog’s stomach, intestines, and the passage of food through the digestive tract. These diseases can cause pain, malabsorption of food, and many other problems for dogs. Digestive upsets may be as simple as a dog developing an intolerance to food or eating garbage, to something more severe, such as bacterial or viral infections and the presence of chronic disease. Changes in diet, food allergies, stress, internal parasites, ingestion of a foreign object or toxin, and drug therapy are also common causes for GI diseases. We’ve put together a list of some common digestive disorders in dogs, including warning signs to look out for and treatment options.
Acute gastritis occurs when the lining of the stomach becomes inflamed or injured. It can be caused by diet (changes in diet, food allergy, food intolerance, and spoiled food), infections, other diseases, or ingestion of foreign objects or toxins (drugs, chemicals, or plants). Common warning signs of dogs with gastritis include sudden vomiting, loss of appetite, dehydration, and abdominal pain.
Diarrhea & Vomiting
Acute diarrhea can be caused by a change of diet, ingestion of toxins, prescription medications, infections, or stressful situations that disturb the healthy bacteria in the GI tract. Allergic food reactions, dietary sensitivities, and intolerances are also common triggers of diarrhea for dogs. Diarrhea can also be a symptom of a variety of other diseases. Acute vomiting can be caused by ingestion of irritating substances, prescription drug therapy, and toxins. Vomiting and diarrhea can also be caused by many other disorders including diseases outside the digestive system.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of chronic disorders that cause inflammation of the digestive tract. Persistent inflammation can lead to damage, thickening, and changing of the intestinal lining. The exact cause of IBD is unknown and can affect all ages and types of dogs. Some forms of IBD are prevalent in certain dog breeds and excessive allergic reactions to food, drugs, and intestinal parasites are thought to be contributors. Weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, and changes in appetite are common warning signs of dogs with IBD.
Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency
Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) is a disease caused by insufficient production and secretion of digestive enzymes by the pancreas. Lack of pancreatic digestive enzymes leads to problems with digestion and absorption of nutrients from the diet. Certain breeds of dogs are more likely to develop this disorder, although it can occur in any breed. Weight loss, increased appetite, vitamin deficiencies, flatulence, and diarrhea are common warning signs of dogs with EPI.
Pancreatitis is a disease caused by inflammation or infection of the pancreas, and can be short-term (acute) or long-term (chronic). Pancreatitis can develop when digestive enzymes are activated inside the pancreas, rather than in the intestinal tract. The enzymes begin to digest the pancreas itself, causing damage within the pancreas. Dogs with high-fat diets, or dogs that eat trash, large amounts of table scraps, or other inappropriate food are more at risk for developing pancreatitis. Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dehydration, weakness, and loss of appetite are common warning signs of dogs with pancreatitis.
If you have concerns about your dog’s digestion, it is important to speak with your veterinarian so they may determine the exact cause of your dog’s problem. Treatments for GI diseases vary and may include a combination of prescription medications, stress management, nutraceuticals, or probiotic supplementation. Because diet plays a significant role in GI health, your veterinarian may recommend a specific type of diet, such as low fat, low residue, high fiber, or hypoallergenic. Learn more about the Types of Gastrointestinal Diets.
Your veterinarian may prescribe a therapeutic diet to help manage your dog’s digestion. Hydrolyzed and novel protein diets are two common types. Hydrolyzed protein diets have a source of protein with a low molecular weight to help reduce the chance of adverse reactions. Novel protein diets use an uncommon or unique type of dietary protein the dog has not been exposed to in order to lessen the chance of allergic response. Learn more about therapeutic diets.
Liquid nutrition may be recommended for dogs with a chronic condition or those recovering from a short term illness. Liquid diets can give the digestive system a chance to rest and help prevent dehydration. These diets should be monitored closely by a veterinarian. It is important that liquid diets contain appropriate ingredients for your dog and meet their nutritional requirements.
Probiotics promote overall gut health, support the protective layers of the bowel, and aid with digestion. Probiotics may help with digestive disorders by encouraging the natural gut microflora, and competing with pathogenic microorganisms.
All treatments should be monitored closely by your veterinarian.VetRxDirect carries a large selection of products for dogs with GI needs. Check out our website for more information.

The pancreas produces enzymes that digest food and allow nutrients to be absorbed. It produces three major enzymes: amylase, lipase, and protease. Amylase breaks down carbohydrates, protease breaks down protein, and lipase breaks down fats. This breakdown is necessary for all of these dietary nutrients to be absorbed and put to use in the body. Sometimes the pancreas can not produce the enzymes needed to help your dog or cat properly digest and gain nourishment from their food. This condition is known as exocrine pancreatic insufficiency(EPI). It occurs more often in dogs than cats and can be caused by pancreatitis or other pancreatic disorders.
Dogs and cats that are diagnosed with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency frequently experience weight loss, diarrhea, lethargy, and increased appetite. Animals suffering from EPI also become deficient in multiple vitamins and nutrients because they cannot absorb them from the food they eat. Vitamin B12 deficiency is very common due to the fact that vitamin B12 is not produced by the body.
If you suspect your pet has pancreatic insufficiency, it is best to talk with your veterinarian. Pancreatic enzyme supplements are commonly prescribed for treatment. These are natural enzymes designed to work like the ones that your dog or cat would normally make themselves. Pancreatic supplements may also include additional sources of vitamins and nutrients such as Panzquin.
Panzquin is a pancreatic enzyme supplement for dogs and cats. This powder formula contains a concentrated source of pancreatic digestive enzymes lipase, protease, and amylase to help digest and absorb nutrients. Panzquin also includes a source of Vitamin B12, or cobalamin, to help prevent deficiency.
This easy to use, prescription powder easily mixes with food and replaces the pancreatic enzymes that your dog or cat doesn’t produce. Epizyme is a digestive aid and may be used in the treatment of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency.
Prescription PancrePlus is a digestive enzyme supplement that assists with digestion of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. It is also fortified with Vitamins, A, D and E for replacement nutrition that your dog or cat is unable to absorb from their diet. Choose from powder or chewable tablets.

Both people and animals alike have natural microbes or “flora” that naturally live on the lining of their intestines. These are beneficial types of bacterias and yeasts that help digest and absorb nutrients from food and defend against “bad” bacteria from taking up residence. Probiotics are a supplemental source of these natural microbes and bacteria. Probiotics can help with intestinal function and help manage diarrhea or irregularity. Keeping a healthy balance of good bacteria in the gut is not only important for proper digestion but also for the immune system. The natural bacteria in the digestive tract is fragile and can easily be diminished by medications like antibiotics or painkillers, poor diet, disease or stress. This can also make your dog susceptible to digestive upsets like diarrhea, gas, and cramping.

Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin that plays an important role in within the body of dogs and cats including the function of the brain and nervous system, cell growth, protein synthesis, metabolism of fat and carbohydrates, and the formation of red blood cells. Vitamin B12, which is also called cobalamin, is not made by the body and must be supplied by food or nutritional supplements. Having a lack of B12 can lead to other health problems, and both dogs and cats can develop a deficiency to this vitamin. In certain breeds of dogs, B12 deficiency can be genetically passed on especially in beagles, border collies, and giant schnauzers. It can also occur in those dogs and cats with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) is a condition which prevents animals from being able to digest and absorb nutrients from food because they lack digestive enzymes in the pancreas. Animals suffering from EPI can become deficient in multiple nutrients including vitamin B12 because they can not absorb it from the food they eat. Some common signs include weight loss, anemia, lethargy, and loss of appetite. If you suspect your dog or cat has a deficiency, talk with your veterinarian. Your veterinarian may use blood tests and lab work to diagnose a B12 deficiency.
B12 supplements are used to help increase and maintain vitamin levels in animals with deficiency, anemia, pancreatic insufficiency, and other conditions. They may be given as a one-time treatment by your veterinarian or prescribed as a routine supplement to help maintain your pet’s levels.
