Porus One Kidney Support for Cats

Porus One at VetRx Direct

What is Porus One for Cats?

Porus One is a nutritional supplement used to support kidney health in your cat. It contains Renaltec, a selective carbon that adsorbs protein byproducts. Digestion and metabolism of proteins leads to waste products, which are typically excreted by the kidneys. Взять срочный займ на карту. Porus One binds protein digestion by-products in the intestines so they can be excreted in the feces. This binding process helps to prevent the byproducts from being converted into uremic toxins, which supports kidney health.

How Does Porus One Help with Uremic Toxins?

  • Cats eat proteins in their diet on a daily basis. When proteins are metabolized in the body, waste products called uremic toxins naturally form. These toxins are then filtered out by the kidneys and excreted in the urine.
  • When a cat’s kidneys no longer function as well as before, they filter out fewer uremic toxins. As a result, the toxins may accumulate in the body and cause damage to the kidneys and other organs.
  • Porus One adorbs toxins while they are still in the intestine and passes them out of the body in the feces. As a result, the toxins do not enter the kidneys and cannot accumulate in the body. This also helps reduce the workload on the kidneys.

What is it made of?

Porus One contains Renaltec®, a pure carbon that is shaped into tiny spheres in a patented production process. Renaltec absorbs protein byproducts (uremic toxins) in the gut so they can be excreted in feces instead of the kidneys.

How To Use Porus One

Porus® One is easily mixed in with your cat’s wet or dry food. It is tasteless and odorless and generally well tolerated by cats.

This supplement may be used for cats with reduced kidney function or types of kidney disease or disorders. Like any supplement, it is always best to consult with your veterinarian to determine if the product best suit’s your cat’s needs. Your veterinarian is the best source of medical information for your cat.

Itchy Pet Awareness and Solutions

The month of August is known as Itchy Pet Awareness Month, which aims to promote dog and cat skin health and your pet’s health and happiness. While commonly overlooked, itching is a medical condition that requires a proper diagnosis to effectively treat the true cause of the itch.

Why is My Pet Itching?

Dogs and cats usually come in contact with irritants by inhaling from the air or by direct contact with the skin. They may also develop allergies or sensitivities to food or treats in their diet. Some common outdoor allergens include parasites like fleas, ticks, lice or mites, insects, pollens, or even chemicals on lawns. Common indoor allergens include dust mites, molds, mildew, as well as household cleaners, detergents, and other products. Some pets may develop allergies that come and go with the seasons. Learn more about Seasonal Allergies in Dogs and Cats on our other blog.

Common Signs of Itching in Dogs and Cats:

  • Scratching is the most obvious sign of itch
  • Biting
  • Chewing
  • Frequent licking
  • Excessive rolling
  • Recurrent ear problems
  • Hair loss
  • Body odor
  • Skin changes

If the scratching becomes intense, your dog or cat may damage their skin while trying to relieve the sensation. As a result, this can leave the skin with open wounds, and vulnerable to infections and the potential for hotspots. You may also notice hair loss, scabbing, and crusting due to excessive scratching, chewing, or rubbing. Because the symptoms of allergies are similar to other disorders, it’s important to speak with your veterinarian if you notice these behaviors.

How Do I Relieve My Pet’s Itching?

Consulting your veterinarian is important to determine the true cause of the itch and what treatment can best help your pet. Your veterinarian may prescribe an antihistamine or anti-inflammatory medication to help relieve your pet’s symptoms. They may also recommend bathing with a medicated shampoo to wash allergens away from the skin and reduce irritation.

How to Prevent Dehydration in Dogs and Cats

At the peak of summer, the month of July has been established as National Pet Hydration Month. While keeping water available to indoor and outdoor pets may seem like common sense, the summer heat can increase risks for dehydration. Providing clean, fresh water for your dog or cat is the single best way to prevent dehydration. However, there are some other factors to consider when it comes to hydration and your pets.

Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluid than it’s taking in. Water is vital to all living things. It affects every process in the body, from organ function to circulation and digestion. Many articles describe the health benefits of humans maintaining water consumption, and the same goes for our furry friends. At the bottom line, keeping your pet hydrated is important to keeping them healthy.

How to Know if Your Cat or Dog is Dehydrated?

Common Signs of Dehydration in Dogs and Cats:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Reduced energy levels
  • Lethargy or depression
  • Panting
  • Sunken, dry-looking eyes
  • Dry nose and gums
  • Loss of skin elasticity

You may be able to detect dehydration at home by gently pinching and lifting the skin over your dog or cat’s shoulder blades. Normally, the skin should quickly return back to its regular position. If the skin stays gathered when you release it, you may have a dehydrated cat on your hands. This is known as “skin tenting” and is a common sign of dehydration. However, this technique does not work as well in cats that are very overweight or very thin.

How to Check Your Pet’s Hydration

What Causes Dehydration in Dogs and Cats?

Dehydration in dogs and cats can be caused by multiple things. When a pet has reduced water intake or increased fluid loss, they are prone to dehydration. This may also cause a loss of electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium which have important functions in the body.

  • Overheating in hot weather
  • Heavy work or exercise
  • A lack of clean drinking water
  • Acute illness or period of vomiting or diarrhea
  • An underlying health condition such as diabetes or kidney disease

How is Dehydration Treated in Cats and Dogs?

Since dehydration is typically a symptom of a larger problem, your veterinarian will need to examine your dog or cat to identify and treat any underlying condition. Severe cases of dehydration require emergency veterinary attention. Without intervention, severe dehydration can lead to organ failure and death.

Prevention: How to Keep Your Pet Hydrated

The best way to keep your pet hydrated is to make fresh water available at all times and replace their water daily to encourage them to drink. Some pets, particularly cats, are finicky drinkers, prefer certain bowls, and even prefer to drink in certain locations. Some dogs and cats prefer to drink moving water from a pet water fountain bowl or a dripping kitchen faucet.

  • Keep their water bowls clean and wash them regularly to prevent bacteria growth.
  • Use a portable or collapsible bowl if you are traveling or on the go.
  • Experiment with different water bowls, and consider trying a pet water fountain.
  • Make sure you offer enough water sources if you have a multi-pet household
  • Try offering wet food in your dog or cat’s diet can help provide a source of hydration.
  • Ask your veterinarian about a hydration supplement or electrolyte fluid.

Keep a good eye on your dog or cat’s drinking habits. If your pet has any sudden changes, including a decrease or increase in drinking water, you should contact your veterinarian. Speak with your veterinarian about a liquid hydration supplement to help boost your pet’s fluid intake or incorporate wet food into their diet.

Elura Approved for Weight Loss in Cats

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Elura (capromorelin oral solution) as the first drug for the management of weight loss in cats with chronic kidney disease.

Chronic kidney disease, also known as CKD, is the persistent loss of kidney function over time. Cats with chronic kidney disease may begin to lose weight before getting diagnosed by a veterinarian and typically continue to lose weight as the disease progresses.Elura at VetRxDirect

Capromorelin, the active ingredient in Elura, provides a novel mechanism of action to address weight loss in cats with CKD. It stimulates appetite and the secretion of growth hormone. Weight gain in cats taking Elura is thought to be due to a combination of increased food intake and metabolic changes.

Capromorelin is also approved as Entyce for appetite stimulation in dogs. Elura is the second product that the FDA has approved for the management of unintended weight loss in cats. The first product, Mirataz, is an appetite stimulant applied topically to the skin. Learn more about the approval of Elura.

Cardalis for Dogs with Congestive Heart Failure

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced the approval of Cardalis for managing congestive heart failure in dogs. Cardalis contains spironolactone and benazepril in a chewable tablet. Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic type medication that helps remove excess salt and fluid from the body and prevents potassium levels from getting too low. Benazepril is an ACE Inhibitor type medication that lowers blood pressure by relaxing veins and arteries.Cardalis at VetRxDirect

When used with other medications, Cardalis is approved to manage the symptoms of mild, moderate, or severe congestive heart failure in dogs due to atrioventricular valvular insufficiency (AVVI). AVI is a form of heart disease in dogs that can lead to congestive heart failure.

What is Congestive Heart Failure?

AVVI commonly occurs in older dogs typically over the age of 8 years and smaller breed dogs. When dogs suffer from heart failure, their hearts are unable to pump sufficient blood to the rest of the organs in the dog’s body. In congestive heart failure, blood backs up in organs and causes them to function abnormally, become swollen with fluid, or both. The most common signs of congestive heart failure include, but are not limited to:

  • Persistent coughing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Reduced energy & stamina
  • Excessive panting
  • Swollen abdomen
  • Restlessness
  • Pale or bluish gums
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss and/or muscle wasting

Diagnosis

As with any heart problem, diagnosing congestive heart failure requires a thorough exam from a veterinarian and typically involves multiple tests. Although heart failure is a chronic disease, it can be medically managed with early diagnosis and a veterinarian-guided treatment plan.

Treatment

It is important to treat heart failure in order to improve heart performance, control arrhythmias, and blood pressure, and improve blood flow. All of these can further damage the heart and blood vessels if not controlled.

Why is Cardalis New?

Human-approved benazepril and spironolactone have been used extra-label to treat AVVI in dogs. With this approval, the FDA has determined the combination of drugs in Cardalis is safe and effective for dogs. Learn more.

What Should I Know about Cardalis?

The safety and effectiveness of Cardalis were demonstrated in a 12-month field study in the United States involving 569 dogs. Cardalis requires a prescription because a veterinarian is needed to diagnose congestive heart failure in dogs due to AVVI, design an appropriate treatment plan, and monitor the safe use of the medication.

Collagile Feeds Joint Health and Mobility for Pets

Collagile at VetRxDirect

Now Available at VetRxDirect!

Collagile is an advanced bioactive peptide supplement for dogs and cats. Collagen is one of the main components of connective tissues, including skin, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and bones. Over time, collagen structures in the body naturally weakened and slowly degrade due to age and activity. Collagile Pet is designed to “feed mobility” by providing valuable nutrients to the musculoskeletal system as well as:

  • Supply bioactive amino acids as valuable building blocks
  • Encourage improvement of collagen metabolism
  • Counteract cartilage degeneration

What makes Collagile so unique is its bioactive peptides, which are different than the average collagen peptides.

Bioactive Peptides

Bioactive Peptides are small components of amino acids derived from natural, animal-derived collagen. These peptides are called biologically active because they are easily absorbed by the body and carried to the target organs of the musculoskeletal system. The peptides also interact with cells involved in cartilage metabolism.

How is Collagile Made?

Natural collagen is treated with hot water and then extracted and broken down into larger molecular weight components. These larger fragments are then enzymatically degraded into low-molecular-weight peptides the so-called Bioactive Peptides. The final product has a high bioavailability, meaning the Bioactive Peptides directly reach the bloodstream and are almost completely absorbed by the body. Learn more about the quality and safety of Bioactive Collagen Peptides.

Benefits of Collagile

Collagile supplement is ideal for both elderly and active dogs and cats over the age of 1 year. Collagile helps keep pets physically active and mobile. Specifically, it helps support cartilage, muscles, bones, tendons, and ligaments.

  • Supports daily activities like climbing stairs or standing up
  • May support unrestricted movement
  • Helps improve endurance and flexibility
  • Supports athletic mobility

Collagile and Food Allergies

The Bioactive Peptides in Collagile are derived from pig skin that is approved for human consumption. Bioactive Peptides do not consist of meat or fat, only small molecular weight amino acid sequences and pure protein which, in general, do not cause allergic reactions. The manufacturer is currently unaware of any allergic reactions connected with et in pets suffering from a pig meat allergy.

  • It does not contain fat, gluten, lactose, purines, cholesterol, food additives, preservatives, GMOs, artificial colors, or flavors.

Learn More How Collagile Works

Like any nutritional supplement, it is recommended to consult with your veterinarian first. For more information and to purchase Collagile, please visit our website.

Coolers to Cat Condos: New Life for our Shipping Materials

As a part of one of our many efforts to recycle and reuse, we donate our excess styrofoam shipping coolers to a local animal shelter organization. With the help of volunteers, the insulated coolers are repurposed into outdoor shelters to help stray cats and other animals stay warm during the harsh midwest winters. The kitty shelters or cat condos are provided free of charge by the local animal shelter.

Without this partnership, these styrofoam coolers would, unfortunately, end up in a landfill.

On a regular basis, we receive many of these insulated, styrofoam coolers to our pharmacy. They arrive cold-packed to ensure sensitive medications like insulin are kept cool. After the medications are unpacked, the coolers have served their intended purpose, but being in good condition, we knew these could go to good use somewhere.

Paired with straw or other bedding materials, stray cats keep warm and out of the wind inside their insulated condos. They also provide a safe shelter during the warmer months. If not occupied by a cat, small wildlife may take advantage of the luxury accommodation.

A local news station picked up on the story, watch the volunteers in action!
