Compounded Trilostane Oral Suspension
Trilostane is a prescription medication used to treat Cushing’s Disease, or hyperadrenocorticism in dogs and cats. Trilostane is an adrenocortical suppressant which prevents the adrenal gland from producing too much cortisol. Cushing’s Disease is a disorder where the body produces too much cortisol hormone. Trilostane is compounded by the VetRxDirect pharmacy in an oral suspension.

The Trilostane (Compounded) suspension is a corn oil based, liquid suspension containing the contents of the Vetoryl Capsules and formulated to the strengths listed on the VetRxDirect home page. As an example, the Trilostane (Compounded) 5mg/ml suspension would require a dose of 2ml twice daily, to be equivalent in dose to a 10mg Vetoryl capsule, twice daily. The oil based Trilostane (Compounded) suspension does not require refrigeration, does require shaking prior to each use and has a beyond-use-date (date at which the product should no longer be used) of 90 days from the date of compounding. Please speak with your veterinarian to determine if a suspension dosage form of trilostane would be appropriate for your dog

Can the oral suspension of Trilostane cause teeth deterioration? I've noticed since I've been giving my 93# dog the medicine since the end of October, his teeth have gotten quite brown. Gums are red as well. They were pretty white prior.?

The most common adverse effects seen with trilostane use are lethargy, weakness, loss of appetite for a fews day, vomiting and diarrhea. I am unable to find any medical literature associating teeth or tongue discoloration or deterioration with the use of trilostane. My 11 year old 54 lb dog has been on a 2 x daily dosage of 0.5 liquid trilostane for 17 days. She is still exhibiting symptoms of Cushings including excessive drinking, urination, panting at rest and increased appetite. How long before she improves??

Trilostane is a common treatment for dogs with high cortisol levels or Cushing’s disease. The starting dose of the medication is determined by the weight of the pet and then adjusted according to the cortisol levels and clinical symptoms. Cortisol levels are typically checked 10-14 days after beginning treatment and the dose is then adjusted accordingly. Reaching the optimum dose to control symptoms and reduce side effects may take several dose adjustments. It is important to follow up with all appointments.
