Heartgard Plus Chewables is a prescription heartworm preventative for dogs containing the antiparasitics Ivermectin and Pyrantel Pamoate.

Heartgard Plus prevents heartworm disease in dogs by killing heartworm larvae.  It also treats and controls hookworms and roundworms.

Hertgard Plus chews are generally well tolerated in dogs.

Each Heartgard Plus chew works by affecting parasitic infections acquired during the previous month/30 days.

Heartgard Plus and other heartworm preventatives dispensed in the United States require a prescription from a veterinarian. Heartgard PLUS is sold as a prescription drug in a maximum of a 12-month supply per dog per year.

• The American Heartworm Society and most veterinarians recommend an annual heartworm test before prescribing a heartworm preventative for your dog or cat. Dogs with existing heartworm infections can have serious reactions after taking this.

The American Heartworm Society and many veterinarians recommend giving your dog year-round protection. While heartworm transmission can decrease in winter months, the risk never reaches zero.  Stopping and starting heartworm preventative can leave gaps in protection that can make your dog vulnerable to heartworm disease.
