  • Tacrolimus is a prescription immunosuppressive eye drop used to treat dry eye and immune-related eye conditions in dogs.

Why is Tacrolimus Ophthalmic given to dogs?

  • It is an immunosuppressive agent that is used to stimulate tear production in dogs with dry eye and manage eye surface inflammatory conditions.
  • Tacrolimus is used to treat dry eye conditions in dogs, including keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) and chronic superficial keratitis (CSK).
  • It may also be prescribed to treat immune-mediated keratitis and pannus in dogs.

What else should I know about Tacrolimus Compounded Ophthalmics?

  • Tacrolimus Compounded Ophthalmics are available in three formulas: ointment, AQ, and MCT.
  • Tacrolimus Ointment ointment is thick and designed to stay in place near the eye.
  • Tacrolimus AQ stands for aqueous. The aqueous suspension has a water base that is used to limit irritation.
  • Tacrolimus MCT stands for medium-chain triglyceride. The base of the MCT solution is derived from coconut oil and is used to limit irritation. 
  • Store at room temperature, away from moisture and sunlight.

What problems could my dog have with Tacrolimus Compounded Ophthalmics?

  • Side effects may include mild burning, stinging, irritation or redness. As well as potential eyelid spasms or loss of hair around the eye.
  • Contact your veterinarian if you notice signs of difficulty breathing or swelling of the throat, which may be a sign of a severe allergic reaction.
  • It may take days to weeks to notice improvement. Do not stop the medication without asking your veterinarian.

How are Tacrolimus Compounded Ophthalmics used for dogs?

  • Use as directed by your veterinarian. Missed doses may cause the return of dry eye.
  • AQ stands for aqueous. The aqueous suspension must be shaken well before use.
  • Wait 5 minutes after applying Tacrolimus to the eye before administering any other eye medication.
  • Wear gloves when applying this medication. Pregnant women should NOT handle this drug.
  • Use proper administration techniques to avoid contamination of the Tacrolimus. Do not touch the dropper tip or allow it to touch your animal's eye or any other surface to prevent contamination. Keep the cap on when not in use.
  • If any residue is left on your animal's face after giving the eye drops, gently wipe it off with a damp cloth or tissue.
  • Store at room temperature away from moisture and sunlight; do not freeze.
