I was just reading the product insert for OstiLox oral Suspension that my vet game to to give to my Yorkshire Terrier. She is 9 pounds and was diagnosed with kidney failure and bladder cancer. We decided to try this in order to reduce the blood in her urine and control pain. The assistant at the vet office marked "3" on the small animal syringe but when I read the insert it says that the syringe is marked by pounds for administration. If this is true I am only giving her the amount for a 3-lb dog. Is this correct, or is there another reason why I would only give her this amount??
-
The syringes included are marked with 1lb increments, meaning your dog would be getting a "3 pound" dose. If your dog has already been diagnosed with renal failure and bladder cancer, it is possible that your veterinarian prescribed a smaller dose of this medication to avoid any negative side effects. Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID), and one of it's side effects includes renal toxicity/ damage to the kidneys. We recommend calling your veterinarian to discuss the appropriate dosage for your pet.

Is it ok to give this med long term? We have a 10 year old Yorkie with joint pain.?
-
It is recommended to switch over to the oral tablet after giving the first dose of the injectable solution. As long as the dog is not experiencing side effects from the medication (vomiting, diarrhea, bloody stools, decreased urination) it is acceptable to continue meloxicam at the lowest effective dose. Please discuss these options with your veterinarian.

What are the long term affects of ostilox??
-
Ostilox (meloxicam) is included in a drug class called Non-Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs or 'NSAIDs' used to relieve pain and inflammation. Meloxicam is a commonly used drug for long-term treatment of osteoarthritis symptoms in dogs. Meloxicam is considered to be safe for dogs and many veterinarians will use this drug as a first-line treatment for long-term pain management. Meloxicam is generally tolerated well, noted adverse effects in dogs are vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. It is important to avoid giving your pet more than one NSAID at a time as this can increase their risk of side effects such as stomach upset and stomach bleeding. Liver and kidney function can be affected by long-term use, therefore it is important to follow the lab monitoring recommended by your veterinarian. Please discuss any concerns you have with your veterinarian. Thank you, VetRxDirect
