Improved dog's mobility
From UndisclosedComments about Metacam (meloxicam) Oral SuspensionOur dog had difficulty getting up with her hind legs, hesitated to use the stairs, slept more, and generally, would evaluate whether it was worth the effort to move it follow us. We tried CBD but wasn't getting the results we wanted. We finally got Metacam, and within 2 days saw improvements. All of the above issues/problems were greatly eased. My vet prescribed the 0.5 mg/ml suspension for my 15 lb Bichon Frise after minor surgery. She instructed to administer 15 graduations on the syringe daily. How many of these doses are in the bottle? I have no information on the syringe gauge. I am alternating with half a pill of 20 mg Galliprant daily, another NSAID but my dog is responding to the Metacam better. Aside from organ analysis I would like to know which is more economical.?
-
More information about the strength (0.5 mg/mL or 1.5 mg/mL) and the size of the package you are looking to order is necessary to determine how many doses are in one bottle of Metacam. Please contact your veterinarian with additional questions on dosing this medication in your dog.

When I placed the order it seemed like it would not be really cold for a few days. The tracking from USPS told me it would be here Monday and it got to my area Saturday, but it didn't come until Wednesday. I see on the metacam box it says store at 68-77°F. I am concerned about it sitting in a truck outside from Saturday to Wednesday because the temperature here was in the low 20's in the mornings and in the mid 40's most days. I am hoping your pharmacist can reassure me that it is still alright? Do I need to get a replacement??
-
According to Metacom's manufacturer, it is recommended to store this product at controlled room temperature, 68 - 77°F (20 - 25°C). Excursions are permitted between 59°F and 86°F (15°C and 30°C). There is no data information on product exposure in lower temperature settings. Please contact your veterinarian for further questions/recommendations regarding this product.

can it be used if it was refrigerated?
-
Metacam Oral Suspension contains meloxicam, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), used to relieve pain and inflammation in dogs with osteoarthritis. According to the manufacturer's recommendations for storage this medication should ideally be kept at a controlled room temperature, 68 - 77°F (20 - 25°C). Temperature fluctuations between 59°F and 86°F (15°C and 30°C) are permitted, and will not harm the medication. Brief exposure to temperatures up to 104°F (40°C) may be tolerated as long as the temperature of the medication does not exceed 77°F (25°C); however exposure to high temperatures should be minimized and if possible, avoided. Refrigerated temperature storage information is not provided but typically doesn't pose an issue unless noted otherwise. It's important that the suspension is shaken well prior to dosing medication.

How long can we keep giving our 13 year old, 114 lb, Golden Retriever this medication. ?
-
Metacam is included in a drug class called Non-Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs or ‘NSAIDs’. Metacam is a commonly used drug for long term treatment of osteoarthritis symptoms in dogs. Metacam is considered to be safe for dogs and many veterinarians will use this drug as a first-line treatment for long-term pain management. However, it is important to avoid giving your pet more than one NSAID at a time as this can increase their risk of side effects such as stomach upset. Please consult your veterinarian with any concerns about switching or discontinuing any of your pets medications.

-
can you give Regulan for stomach upset if dog is taking Metacam??
-
The decision to use metoclopramide for the treatment of gastrointestinal upset secondary to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory use would be made after a careful evaluation of your dog by your veterinarian. While it does not appear to be routine to use metoclopramide for this indication, it may be appropriate for your pet. Consult with your veterinarian prior to administering metoclopramide to your dog. When we dose out the Metacam to pets in individual doses in a syringe should we be covering the syringe with tape? dose sunlight affect the drugs potency??
-
Colleen, If you are dosing out medication to be stored in syringes, we would recommend to protect the medication from sunlight either by using amber syringes or by storing in a light resistant container. Photo-stability studies on meloxicam did show a slight degradation in the samples not protected from light. Using the clear syringe provided with the Metacam medication is recommended when dosing out the medication immediately prior to administering. Thank you, VetRxDirect
