- Edetate Disodium (EDTA) is a prescription eye drop used to treat corneal calcium deposits in dogs and cats.
Why is EDTA 1% Ophthalmic Compounded Solution given to cats and dogs?
- EDTA is a chelating agent used to remove calcium deposits on the surface of the cornea.
- This medication may be prescribed to treat corneal calcium deposits that may have formed in association with certain eye conditions.
- EDTA has also been used to decrease corneal digestion due to collagenase activity in infected ulcers.

- Dropper top for easy application.
- Store the eye drops at room temperature, away from moisture and sunlight.
- There are approximately 20 drops per milliliter in an ophthalmic solution.
- This medication can be given for various lengths of time, so be sure you understand how long your veterinarian wants you to continue giving it.
What problems could my dog or cat have with EDTA 1% Ophthalmic Solution?
- Side effects may include mild stinging on application, irritation, or redness of the eyes.
- There are many drugs that interact with EDTA. Do not give your cat or dog any new drugs or supplements without speaking with your veterinarian.
How is EDTA 1% Compounded Ophthalmic Solution used for dogs and cats?
- Use proper administration techniques to avoid contamination of the eye drops. Keep the cap on when not in use.
- Do not touch the dropper tip or allow it to touch your animal’s eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
- If any residue is left on your animal’s face after giving the eye drops, gently wipe it off with a damp cloth or tissue.
- Wash hands before and after administering.
- Wait 5 minutes after applying the EDTA (compounded Ophthalmic Solution before applying any other eye medications. Use eye drops before eye ointments to allow the drops to absorb into the eye.
- Discard by the date indicated on the label.
