Lethargy, weight gain, hair loss, irritated skin – if your dog has these symptoms, he may have hypothyroidism. The condition is usually caused by a malfunctioning thyroid gland that does not produce enough – or any – of the key hormones that regulate important systems in your pet’s body. Prescription Canine Thyroid Chewables help regulate your pet’s system so he’s healthier and has a better quality of life. Veterinarians prescribe Canine Thyroid Chewables for pets with hypothyroidism because the key ingredient, levothyroxine sodium, works as a replacement for the hormones that your pet’s thyroid gland produces naturally. Canine Thyroid Chewables are available in nine dosage strengths in easy-to-administer chewable tablets. Do you have questions about Canine Thyroid Chewables? Click on the “Ask a Question” tab above.

Does this have to be taken on an empty stomach??
-
In humans, this medication is best absorbed on an empty stomach. Speak with your veterinarian about how they want your pet to take this medication. Your veterinarian will be taking lab measurements for several weeks after starting the medication to determine a stable dose so it is important to be consistent with the administration of this medication. will pala-tech 0.7 cause a dog to lose hair?
-
Holl, Hair loss can be noticed by an owner as a symptom of low thyroid in dogs. Hair loss after starting a levothyroxine supplement to treat the low thyroid condition can also be seen in dogs. Hair loss may begin a couple of weeks after starting the levothyroxine supplement may take several weeks before improvement may be seen. Talk to your veterinarian about your dogs hair loss. Be sure to keep all lab appointments. This will ensure levothyroxine level is being monitored to achieve the best possible outcome for your dog. Thank you, VetRxDirect

What are the differences between human and canine levothyroxine ?!?
-
Rafa, The thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and L-triiodothyronine (T3), are present and have similar functions in both humans and canines. Specifically, the T4 hormone secreted initially by the thyroid in both humans and canines is converted to the more active T3 metabolite that regulates metabolism, growth, and development. Levothyroxine (synthetic T4) mimics the T4 hormone. The difference between human and canine levothyroxine is how much of the synthetic hormone is absorbed when given orally and how much hormone is required daily. Typically, canines require higher doses of levothyroxine than humans, but ultimately the dose and frequency of dosing (once or twice daily) will be determined by your pet’s veterinarian. Please also consult with your pet’s veterinarian about which available levothyroxine product is best for your pet as several brand and generic products are available and some of these products may not be interchangeable with others. My dog has diabetes. Is this chewable ok for a diabetic dog? ?
-
Per the manufacturer, Pala-Tech canine thyroid chewable tablets do contain a form of sugar, sucrose, that makes up about 12% of each tablet. They report no other sugar or carbohydrates added and that each tablet is approximately 4 calories. Before using this product, it would be important to first discuss with your pet’s veterinarian in order to determine the safety in a pet with diabetes. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Does this medication need to be taken on an empty stomach an hour before a meal or can I feed it to my dog at the same time as his meal. There is no mention of any specific requirement on the label, but I want to know I'm giving it correctly. thanks?
-
It is best to give on an empty stomach at the same time each day at least an hour before food. If you were to give it with food, try and make sure it’s with the same amount of food every day as different amounts of food may affect dosing for this drug. Blood levels need to be monitored and doses may be changed, so it is a good idea to try to keep the dosing either with the same amount of food every morning or never giving it with food. Talk with your veterinarian about checking levels of thyroid hormone and dosing around meals. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Why is it I can only purchase 1 tablet instead of a whole bottle like I get from the Vets.??
-
We don't sell the medication per bottle because it comes in 1000-tablet bottles, and we cannot dispense more than a year's worth of medication on one prescription. We sell it per tablet so that you can choose the quantity that the veterinarian has prescribed, which varies from pet to pet. Thank you, VetRxDirect

I've been giving my dog Thyroxine 0.4 regular pills but I'd like to switch to chewables if possible. Much easier for her then a pill she has to swallow. Is this the same equilavent??
-
Ann, The chewables are a levothyroxine sodium tablet, like the Soloxine, Thyrokare, Thyro-tabs, etc. Your dog's veterinarian would be able to say best whether he or she would approve the chewable tablets, as they are a slightly different formulation, but most pet owners find that veterinarians are okay approving either type of tablet.
