How do you use Phos-Bind?
- Use as directed by your veterinarian.
- Manufacturer suggests giving 100 mg/kg by mouth once daily with meals. Dosage should be adjusted based on serial serum phosphorus determinations every 2 to 4 weeks or as indicated by your veterinarian.
- Manufacturer administration techniques: Aluminum hydroxide powder can be easily mixed with canned or fresh food. For dry food, place the kibbles in a plastic baggie with the powder and shake the baggie to mix it, which allows the powder to adhere to the dry food. You can also slightly warm the dry food in the microwave (5-8 seconds) and then shake the powder with the food in a baggie. *DO NOT MICROWAVE PHOS-BIND* The outer fatty coating of dry food (called digest) softens with warming and will let the powder attach more readily.

Actually Tasteless
From UndisclosedComments about Phos-Bind 35g PowderMy Magneto was born with small kidneys so the doctor recommended this to help reduce the amount of phosphate build up. I was worried he would turn his nose at it because of the taste but I've mixed it with wet food and he gobbles it right up. I've even dusted it on dry food in a pinch and he didn't mind. -

Hello....I need help with the dosage. My dog weighs 12.6 lbs. and is currently on 4 ml of Alternagel (320 mg/5 ml.). What would be an equivalent dosage of Phos Bind??
-
We need to put one of our patients on this product and the dosage would be 100mg per day, I was wondering how many mg are per scoop and how we would have the owner measure out the 100mg? thank you so much in advance for your help.?
-
Phos-Bind comes in two different size containers, 35 grams and 200 grams, each with their own scoop. For the 35 gram container, the scoop is 1.25 cc (¼ tsp) and measures 250 mg/scoop. The 200 gram container has a scoop size of 2.5 cc (½ tsp) and measures 500 mg/scoop. The recommended dosing is 100 mg/kg daily with meals according to the manufacturer.

Just FYI… I also have those little spoons, but my spoons seem to measure differently: "Hint" = 1/8 tsp, "pinch" = 1/16 tsp, and "smidge" looks to be 1/32 tsp. A "drop" is the smallest. I'm still trying to figure out how to measure 150 - 175 mg per meal…
Community Answer -
My cat is supposed to have 1/4 tsp per day (1 scoop from the smaller container). Since she is fed wet food twice, she gets 1/8 tsp per meal. Those pinch-smidgen-dash spoons are helpful here. The dash spoon is 1/8 tsp. The smidgen is 1/16 tsp. and the pinch is 1/32 tsp.

Hi! I just received my second order of Phos-Bind and I am concerned because the texture of the powder is totally different than the first container. The powder in one container is very light and smooth, like flour, and the other is very granular, like salt. I'm wondering about the difference and what the texture is supposed to be??
-
Please contact customer service via email at [email protected] to provide more information in regards to your order. Then we can reach out to the manufacturer to obtain the best answer.
Verified Answer -
Yes, I experienced the same thing (but ordered through another site). I actually prefer the new granular texture, it doesn't "poof up" and get all over the place like the fine (flour-like) version. It seems to mix in better as well.

Can you mix Phos-bind with your cat's therapeutic food which contains potassium citrate? I have read that the potassium citrate can speed up the absorption of the aluminium in aluminium hydroxide binders causing aluminum toxicity.?
-
According to the manufacturer, this medication is meant to be used with your cat’s food. The manufacturer does not supply information on if potassium citrate would cause an issue with Phos-bind. The manufacturer does recommend consulting your veterinarian if your cat takes other medications or if you notice any unusual side effects while your cat is on this medication. Please contact your veterinarian for further information or concerns about the safety of this product for your cat.

Can I fill a gelatine capsule with the recommended dosage and give to my cat??
-
The package insert states that this medication should be sprinkled over the animal’s food prior to ingestion. Putting the powder in a gelatin capsule would still be acceptable as this medication is absorbed in the animal’s small intestine. A gelatin capsule would disintegrate within a few minutes of reaching your cat’s stomach fluid and achieve the same desired effect as sprinkling the powder on the food. Based on your cat’s recommended dosing, it may be difficult to pack multiple gel capsules full of the required dose. You should talk to your veterinarian about any further questions or concerns regarding appropriateness of this product in your cat.
