Why is Phos-Bind given to cats and dogs?

- Phos-Bind helps reduce serum levels of phosphorus and may help better manage chronic renal disease.
What else should I know about Phos-Bind?
- Phos-Bind is a tasteless, odorless, finely granulated powder.
- Highly palatable when blended with your cats or dogs meals.
- Aluminum toxicity has not been found to be a concern in cats and dogs.
- 35 gram powder comes with 1 scoop (1/8 tsp). 35 gram powder contains 90 scoops.

What problems could my cat or dog have with Phos-Bind?
- It is recommended to consult with your veterinarian before using a nutritional supplement for your cat or dog.
How do you use Phos-Bind?
- Use as directed by your veterinarian.
- Manufacturer suggests giving 100 mg/kg by mouth once daily with meals. Dosage should be adjusted based on serial serum phosphorus determinations every 2 to 4 weeks or as indicated by your veterinarian.
- Manufacturer administration techniques: Aluminum hydroxide powder can be easily mixed with canned or fresh food. For dry food, place the kibbles in a plastic baggie with the powder and shake the baggie to mix it, which allows the powder to adhere to the dry food. You can also slightly warm the dry food in the microwave (5-8 seconds) and then shake the powder with the food in a baggie. *DO NOT MICROWAVE PHOS-BIND* The outer fatty coating of dry food (called digest) softens with warming and will let the powder attach more readily.

- 200 gram powder: Active ingredient per 1 scoop (1/4 tsp): Aluminum Hydroxide 500 mg.

A minute dose in each meal for our kidney compromised feline. We use a total of 1/8 teaspoon per day.

Amazing results!
From UndisclosedComments about Phos-Bind 35g PowderPhos-bind was veterinarian recommended for my new foster Mastiff, Lincoln. Lincoln came to me dangerously close to kidney failure, his labs were off the charts! I have now had Lincoln 9 months. He gets home cooked meals and 2 scoops 2x daily of Phos-bind...no medications! Lincoln's last two 3-month bloodwork's have been utterly amazing! All corresponding levels have been drastically reduced, each time! Thanks to your company offering this product to pet owners and rescues! Lincoln and others like him have bright futures ahead of them! As well as peace of mind for the ones who dearly love them! -
Phos-bind
From UndisclosedComments about Phos-BindMy MRF Mastiff foster, Lincoln, has Benn using this product for 9 no. for Kidney Disease. Besides changing to homemade meals this is the only "medication" he is on. Lincoln has had two lab work ups since beginning Phos-bind and each time all related levels were drastically reduced! -
Fast ship, order correct, no complaints
From UndisclosedComments about Phos-BindMy vet wants one of my cats on Phos-Bind to lower her phosphorus retention due to kidney disease. Phos-Bind is a powder that I mix into her wet food, so it is easy to administer. Vet Rx Direct had the best price at the time of my order and shipped same day. USPS took 8 days to deliver from a nearby state, however, in spite of the fact Vet Rx shipped Priority mail. -
Phos-Bind is GREAT!
From UndisclosedComments about Phos-Bind 200g PowderAfter much research, I discovered food high in phosphorus was bad for cats with renal disease. I bought low phosphorus foods but my old cat quickly lost interest. I saw Phos-Bind in a veterinary paper on line and asked my vet about it. He had just started recommending and selling it. They prescribed 1/4 t. in meals. I have used it now for a couple of years. My 17 1/2 year old cat gets it in both his meals. He's entering his 3rd year with renal disease and only started on subcu fluid support in the last 6 months. I give Phos-Bind all the credit for his survival. It's GREAT! -
Much-needed meds delivered fast
From UndisclosedComments about Phos-Bind 35g PowderMy kitty has been taking Phos-Bind daily for months, and we came dangerously close to running out. Ordered it here and paid for 3-5 day shipping, holding my breath that it'd come on time the week of Christmas. It shipped out the day I ordered and arrived within 4 days. Zuko and my family thanks you! Phos-Bind has been crucial to extending his quality of life. -

Med helped my dog.
From UndisclosedComments about Phos-Bind 200g PowderMy dogs shakes stopped after first dose as calcium was too high. -
Thank you!
From UndisclosedComments about Phos-BindI picked this product because it was suggested to help my kitty Molly's kidney function. So far so great! Thank you Vet Rx Direct for the quick delivery. -
Helps my dog with CKD eat more consistently
From UndisclosedComments about Phos-BindMy dog has chronic kidney disease and often has trouble eating due to nausea. I use a scoop of this each time she eats. I mix it into warm chicken broth and put her prescription kibble on top. It mixes in easily, and appears to be odorless and tasteless. I can already tell that her appetite has increased, and I am using less of her expensive anti-nausea medicine each week. The bigger size container is a perfect size- not too big and not too small. -

Hi, How many of your spoons included with the 35g container would my 13 pound get PER DAY? thank you!?
-
For the 35 gram container, the scoop is 1.25 cc (¼ tsp) and measures 250 mg/scoop. The labeled directions for Phos-Bind is 100 mg/kg daily with meals. The manufacturer recommends that the total daily dose should be divided up and given with each meal. For a 13 pound cat or dog, the total number of scoops per day would be 2.36 scoops per day. However, dosage should be adjusted based on serial serum phosphorus values every 2-4 weeks or as indicated by your veterinarian. It is recommended to contact your veterinarian to determine the proper dosage and the directions to administer Phos-Bind for your cat or dog. Thank you for allowing us to assist you today, VetRxDirect.

I received the "New Finer Powder" product which has a 1/8 scoop instead of the previous product that was more granular with a 1/4 scoop. Are the dosing instructions now different with the New Finer Powder for a maximum amount of 1/8 scoop per day instead of the 1/4 scoop in the previous product? That is, do I now need to change the amount I give my cat now that the product has been remade??
-
The new ⅛ scoop is equivalent to the previous ¼ scoop as they are both 250mg per scoop. The labeled directions for Phos-Bind is 100 mg/kg daily with meals. The manufacturer recommends that the total daily dose should be divided up between meals. Based upon how much your cat weighs, it will determine how many scoops you should give them. Please speak to your veterinarian as they can help you determine the proper dosage to administer to your cat.

Hi, is this product made from a gel that has been turned into a powder? Apparently, that's the type of aluminum hydroxide recommended by my vet. Thank you?
-
According to the manufacturer, Phos-Bind is made from a dried gel and converted into a fine powder.

There seems to be incorrect and/or confusing information in the product description. 35 g powder contains 250 g of Aluminum Hydroxide : how can 35g of powder contain 250 g of AlOH? [It should be '250 mg AlOH' based on the product pictures]. Reducing the potential for confusion will be a good thing. For the following, maybe the "scoops" are different sizes? If that's the case, add in parentheses the scoop size, e.g. 90 (1/4 tsp) scoops. Phos-Bind 35g container = 90 scoops Phos-Bind 200g container = 200 scoops?
-
Can this be mixed with a pro-biotic paste? I use the Proviable paste and want to make sure it doesn't contain anything that would adhere to or react with the Phos-Bind.?
-
According to the manufacturer, the kaolin and pectin in Proviable paste could delay absorption of some medications, so the administration of the paste should be separated by 1-2 hours from other medications.

I am confused by the dosage information for this product. Previously you answered, " A scoop is included with the Phos-Bind powder. 1 Leveled scoop of powder contains 500mg of Aluminum hydroxide, and the manufacturer recommends giving 100mg/kg daily with meals." So for a 100mg do I give a 5th of a scoop and is a 100mg given at each meal? Does it matter how much the dog weighs??
-
Phos-Bind comes in two different size containers, 35 grams and 200 grams, each with their own scoop. For the 35 gram container, the scoop is 1.25 cc (¼ tsp) and measures 250 mg/scoop. The 200 gram container has a scoop size of 2.5 cc (½ tsp) and measures 500 mg/scoop. The labeled directions for Phos-Bind is 100 mg/kg daily with meals. The manufacturer recommends that the total daily dose should be divided up and given with each meal. The weight of the animal is important, because the labeled dosage of Phos-Bind is based on weight: 100 mg is given per 1 kilogram (2.2 lbs) of body weight. The dosage of this product will also vary based on the individual needs of your pet, and it is recommended that your pet’s blood values be checked periodically to ensure the correct dosage. Your veterinarian can help determine the proper dosage and provide you with the directions to administer Phos-Bind to your pet.

I have heard on a kidney failure FB group that medication should not. E given within 2 hours of Phos Bind. Is that correct? This makes it near impossible to give meds & binder in food before going to work. TY?
-
Some medications interact with the Phos-Bind, it is recommended that Phos-Bind is used under the supervision of your veterinarian. Please inform your veterinarian of all medications including over-the-counter products your pet is taking to help prevent interactions. For best absorption of medications, it is recommended to separate those administered orally from Phos-Bind by at least 2 hours.

Can I mix the total amount in my cats wet food and then refrigerate the left over for later meals? Will the ingredients still work if it is mixed earlier in the day??
-
According to the manufacturer, it is OK to mix Phos-Bind into the food and refrigerate for use later. The manufacturer warns not to heat the food with the PhosBind already mixed in. If the food is to be heated later, add the PhosBind just before serving.
