Q & A

Do you have to finish the prescription if dog is better after 5 days....like an antibiotic for humans.?
-
You should always give a prescription medication to your dog as directed by your veterinarian. Antibiotics should be given for the full course of treatment, even if your dog appears to be better. This is to ensure that the infection is completely gone, otherwise your dog may have the same infection come back because it was not fully treated. It’s also important to use the full prescribed course of antibiotics to prevent the spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Is it safe to give to a pregnant dog??
-
Minocycline belongs to an antibiotic class called tetracyclines which are known to slow fetal skeletal development and cause discoloration of teeth in the offspring of animals who have used minocycline during pregnancy. Typically, minocycline is only used in the last half of pregnancy when the benefits of its use outweigh the risks. Minocycline is thought to have less effect on teeth and bones than other drugs in the tetracycline class however it is important to speak to your veterinarian to determine the need for this antibiotic for your dog. I understand this drug causes GI upset. My dog is refusing to eat after three days of the medication for anaplasmosis. Do you have any recommendations of what I can do to help ease the nausea so my dog can eat and not feel so ill? Thank you.?
-
Minocycline can and should be given with food to reduce nausea and stomach upset. If your dog is refusing to eat at all, I would contact your veterinarian to discuss further options. It is important to note that one of the most common symptoms of anaplasmosis is inappetance, but symptoms tend to improve after 1-2 days of treatment with an antibiotic. If you feel your dog is not improving, or worsening, we recommend you contact your veterinarian. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Does 300mg twice a day seem excessive for my 90 lb Lab??
-
Minocycline is a broad spectrum tetracycline antibiotic useful in treating susceptible bacterial infections. Your veterinarian will determine the proper dose and duration of minocycline for your dog depending on the diagnosis. In general, a recommended dosing range for minocycline is 5-12.5mg/kg every 12 hours. Based on this range and the weight of your dog, 300mg twice daily does not seem excessive. Be sure to follow all dosing directions from your veterinarian to ensure the best possible outcome for your pet. Thank you, VetRxDirect
