What are IV Sets for Cats and Dogs?

  • Fluid administration is often prescribed for rehydration and electrolyte balancing.
  • Cats or dogs with chronic renal failure or dehydration from other medical causes often need additional fluids and nutrients to restore appropriate hydration levels, help their system flush waste, and manage electrolytes.
  • Your veterinarian may prescribe giving intravenous fluids that need to be delivered under the skin or “subcutaneously.”
  • For subcutaneous fluid injection, you will need an IV Set.
  • This IV Set includes inches of vented tubing. A bag holds the prescribed fluid. A needle at the end of the tubing is inserted into your cat’s or dog's skin, usually between the neck and shoulder blades.

Why do cats and dogs use IV Sets?

  • If your pet has been diagnosed with kidney disease, diarrhea, dehydration, electrolyte abnormalities, or another disease that causes fluid loss, your veterinarian may prescribe subcutaneous fluid injections at home.
  • Fluid therapy may also be used in pets that are vomiting or have a reduction in oral fluid intake.
  • Needles and IV Sets are used with fluid bags of solutions such as Lactated Ringers Solution, Sodium Chloride, or Normosol R to administer fluids.

What problems could my dog or cat have with fluid administration?

  • There may be some fluid accumulation. This should go away before the next time fluids are to be administered.
  • Contact your veterinarian if you see signs of infection at the injection site or if your dog or cat develops a cough.

How do you use IV Sets?

  • Your veterinarian will teach you how to administer the fluids. Follow your veterinarian's directions for use.
