Really helps with inappetance
From UndisclosedComments about Cyproheptadine HCl (Generic)This drug works so much better than what our former vet prescribed (Mirtazapine) which gave my cat very unpleasant side effects. -
Cyproheptadine works wonders for kitties' appetites!
From UndisclosedComments about Cyproheptadine HCl (Generic)I give 1/2 of a cyproheptadine in the morning to Meow Meow to help make sure she eats enough every day. No side effects, and she eats very well. Also used this product in the past on Mayumi angel kitty, who had crf and diabetes and didn't always want to eat. Worked very well with her also; none of the side effects that mirtazapine seems to have (also used that before). Thanks for fast shipping and reasonable price, too. -
I have been buying this product for the last eight years.
From UndisclosedComments about Cyproheptadine HCl (Generic)I have a cat that has some very serious health problems and was losing weight very fast. While she was still in her growing years she suddenly started to lose weight and went from 10lbs down to 6 lbs in just a few months. Our veterinarian and I decided to give her an appetite stimulant. She started to gain the weight back right away, so at least weight loss isn't something I have to worry about. -
Prescribed as appetite stimulant...
From Bronx, NY, USAComments about Cyproheptadine HCl (Generic)...although, I understand it has other uses. Twenty-year-old cat has reduced appetite as a result of advanced age (but he's still in pretty good shape!). Was ravenous for the first three weeks on this pill, and gained about two much-needed pounds in six -eight weeks. Appetite is not as robust as before, despite remaining on rx, but is eating a reasonable amount and maintaining the weight gain. -
Good Price, BUT....
From California, USAComments about Cyproheptadine HCl (Generic)I bought the cypro for my sick cat and it was cheaper here than through my vet, BUT the bummer is they don't put an expiration on it. I had to call and have them look at the bottle they had so I knew for sure it was safe. Explanation is that they go thru it so fast, but still I think pet owners would like to know that the meds. they're giving are safe for their pet to take.

Is this .24 for 100 tablets or .24 for one tablet??

Cyproheptadine, as with many of the tablets that we dispense, is sold per tablet. As dosages and duration of therapy can vary widely, this permits pet owners to purchase the exactly number of tablets their pet's veterinarians have prescribed. Thank you, VetRxDirect

I was prescribed this pill 5 years ago to gain weight... is this the same pill i was prescribed by my doctor and is it safe for my cat?

Katrina, The brand name Periactin tablet, approved for human use, is no longer available. Less expensive generic versions of this product are now available in the marketplace. Cyproheptadine was the active ingredient in the Periactin tablet. Cyproheptadine is used as an antihistamine and to treat itching in dogs and cats. It is also used as an appetite stimulant in cats. Possible side effects include sedation, lethargy and possible mucus membrane dryness. Contact your veterinarian if the sedation/lethargy becomes severe. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Can this medication be given to our cat long term, say for many months??
-
Tom, Cyproheptadine may be useful as an appetite stimulant in animals. Cyproheptadine is utilized less commonly for other indications such as the treatment of feline asthma, itching, allergies, inappropriate urination and sometimes as an adjunctive therapy for Cushing's syndrome or in animals with serotonin syndrome. Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine and may cause sedation and lethargy and drying effects and increased thirst. Long term of use of cyproheptadine is not uncommon however occasional lab work and routine follow-up by your veterinarian may be required. Thank you, VetRxDirect
