good way to medicate our crabby cat
Our oldest and crankiest cat, Max, needs supplemental potassium. He's a master at avoiding a pill or a powder, and I didn't relish the idea of World War III twice a day with him. Our vet knows the problems with Max and suggested the gel form. Brilliant!! We just mix it in with a dab of wet food and he snarfs it down. I tell him it's the gravy. He can use to gain a little weight and we feed dry food so the wet food isn't an issue.
We LOVE the service from vetrxdirect - and the herd (7, all black & all indoor-only) loves the treats that come with our orders. vetrxdirect treats us like they really want our business, which will make me a loyal customer.

I hate this stuff - but it works
This has got to be the worst delivery system of any med I have had to give my cat. It is goopey, greasy, and she hates it. I would much rather give her a pill. Plus, the tube it comes in is one of those old, metal toothpaste tubes that you have to squeeze and roll up from the bottom. I have to squeeze the gel into a large oral syringe and then "inject" doses into a smaller oral syringe to give it to my cat. Doing it this way does make it easy to adjust the dose, but I am not sure that is ever necessary. But it does work. My cat has had chronic hypokalaemia and is finally getting low normal readings in her blood work.

Gel does not pass the feline taste test
From Seattle, WA, USAComments about Tumil-K (potassium gluconate)Neither of my cats will touch this gel or any food with the gel on or in it. From now on I will stick with the Renal K powder, which is essentially the same product but does not require a prescription.

Q & A
-
Do these require a prescription? Why do other Potassium Gluconate tablets require a prescription if these don't??
-
Potassium Gluconate is classified as a dietary supplement. The FDA does not have the authority to approve dietary supplements before they are marketed. The FDA is primarily limited to postmarket enforcement. The FDA’s role in regulating supplements includes inspecting supplement manufacturing facilities, investigating complaints, reviewing adverse event reports from manufacturers and monitoring ingredients used in supplements to make sure they meet set standards. It is illegal to market a dietary supplement that is represented for treatment, prevention or cure of a certain disease. To make these claims would require a prescription. Tumil-K (potassium gluconate), which is available without a prescription, states that it is a potassium supplement to support the health of kidneys in cats and dogs and is recommended for use as a potassium supplement in cats and dogs with potassium deficiency. RenaKare (potassium gluconate), which requires a prescription, has listed under the indications: For use as a potassium supplement in hypokalemic cats and dogs. Hypokalemia would be a disease state and therefore require a prescription from a licensed veterinarian. Potassium gluconate supplements marketed as a prescription product must contain the legend: Caution: Federal law prohibits this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. These products must be prescribed or dispensed by a licensed veterinarian. If a veterinarian wants to recommend a potassium supplement for a mild deficiency or to help support normal potassium levels, they may choose to recommend an over the counter product and direct the pet owner to administer as labeled, ¼ level teaspoon (2mEq) once daily. If a laboratory value determines a more serious deficiency, a veterinarian may choose to prescribe a potassium gluconate supplement with instructions specific to the pet, ie. Give ½ level teaspoon (4mEq) twice daily.

Is Tumil-K similar to RX Renal Canine??
-
These two products are different in both their ingredients and labeled use. Tumil-K is a potassium supplement designed for dogs and cats with potassium deficiency. Rx Renal Canine does not contain potassium, it contains a blend of natural extracts. RxRenal canine is a nutritional supplement that may help support kidney health.

Hi, my cat needs 3 mEq twice a day. How much would that be in the powder container? Does this container come with a measuring spoon? Or should I buy more tablets??
-
The manufacturer recommended dosing for Tumil-K (potassium gluconate) powder is ¼ teaspoon twice per day with food. One quarter teaspoon of powder is equivalent to 2mEq of potassium. To give 3 mEq per dose you would need to give 0.375 teaspoon, which would be difficult to measure accurately. A dose of 3 mEq may be more accurately and easily given by using the 2 mEq Tumil-K tablets and giving 1 ½ tablets per dose. Consult with your veterinarian for their recommendation on this issue.

Are the tablets suitable for giving to cats? I was told by my vet they are fine for dogs, but too large for a cat. Dosage necessary is 1/2 teaspoon every 12 hours. Can you split tablets if necessary? Is the tablet equal to 1/2 teaspoon? I am interested in the tablets because my cat detests the gel and gags and drools it out.?
-
Tumil-K tablets are advertised for cats as well as dogs. Please contact your veterinarian to determine the number of tablets necessary. According to the manufacturer and product label, the usual dose in dogs and cats is 1 tablet per 10 pounds of pet's body weight twice a day. Give Tumil-K exactly as directed by your veterinarian. The tablets are scored and may be cut with a pill splitter. Please contact your veterinarian to determine if this product is appropriate for your cat.

Why out of stock? When do you expect more product to come in??
-
Out of stock items generally means that the product is on a manufacturer back order, so we are unable to get it from them. Unfortunately we do not have a date of when we will get it back in stock. We do update the website as soon as we are able to get it again so we suggest checking the website every couple of weeks. Thank you, VetRxDirect
