What are Theophylline Extended-Release Tablets for Dogs and Cats?
- Theophylline is a prescription medication that treats asthma and some heart conditions.
- Theophylline works by relaxing the airways and by inhibiting the release of inflammation-causing mast cells.
- Extended release tablets allow the drug to enter the system more slowly so that fewer doses need to be given.
Why do cats and dogs use Theophylline?
- Theophylline may be prescribed for conditions such as asthma, coughing, collapsing trachea, and other respiratory conditions.
- Theophylline may also be given with other medications to treat heart conditions that involve elevated blood pressure in the lungs.
What else should I know about Theophylline?
- Theophylline is a medication that will likely require blood level monitoring, so it is crucial for you to keep all appointments with your pet's veterinarian.
What problems could my dog or cat have with Theophylline?
- Theophylline can cause nausea, vomiting, headache, and insomnia.
- Nervousness and stomach upset seen at the beginning of treatment may go away over time as the body adjusts to the drug.
- Signs of toxicity should be reported to your pet's veterinarian right away and they include persistent vomiting, cardiac arrhythmias, and seizures.
How do you use Theophylline?
- Theophylline may be given with or without food. Follow your veterinarian's directions.
- Theophylline is only effective if given regularly as prescribed. Be careful not to miss doses. Do not double up the dose if you miss one.
What is in Theophylline?
- The drug Theophylline is a bronchodilator and diuretic.
- It opens the air passages in the lungs by relaxing the muscles in the lungs and chest.
Will I get what I see in the picture?
- Theophylline is sold as an FDA approved generic drug. Brand may vary from order to order and variation to variation. We are unable to guarantee which brand will be available at the time of order shipment.
Is it important for my dog or cat to finish all of the Theophylline?
- Dogs and cats may use Theophylline for different lengths of time. Please consult your veterinarian if you have any questions.

From UndisclosedComments about Theophylline Extended-Release (Generic)My 12 year old black lab has an enlarged heart and she coughs a lot. Theophylline really seems to calm her cough and also seems to make her sleep a lot. It has been a life saver for her. -
Best value for this medication.
From UndisclosedComments about Theophylline Extended-Release (Generic)I use this medicine for one of my senior dogs with an enlarged heart. It works great. It's not the only medication she takes, of course, but I recall when I added this to her regimen, I noticed a distinct improvement. Also, it was the least expensive way to buy this medication. The other strengths are quite expensive, but I quarter this one, and it works fine. -
Will purchase again with my vets rx

my dog's vet ordered two 200 mgm capsules twice a day on the prescription. can i provide that prescription to get one 400 mgm capsule twice a day??
-
Changes made to dose strength and directions would need to be authorized by your veterinarian, as he/she is most knowledgeable about what is appropriate for your dog.

Is this a tablet that can be split? My dog has a 50 mg capsule, receives 2 capsules twice a day or 200g per day. Vetrx is currently out of the 50mg. I plan to divide the 400mg tablet into 4 sections for the 50mg dose.?
-
Unfortunately VetRxDirect does not sell theophylline in 50mg tablets. It is available in 100mg tablets, that you could give1 tablet twice daily and would not require splitting. Tablets are usually scored and able to be split, but capsules cannot be split. We recommend talking with your veterinarian if you need to split tablets for the correct dose.

I have a min pin and my vet stopped caring this. He prescribed 25 mg 2 times per day for my dog. Can I cut this into quarters or does that make it lose efficiency??
-
If Theophylline Extended-Release tablet is split its slow release properties will be lost and it will not work as intended. Ask your veterinarian if there are alternative options for your pet.

My Chihuahua is 12 years old and has been on this since she was 4. She only has about 10 days worth left and all of a sudden, I can't find any anywhere. Will Theophylline ER 100mg be available ever again? or should we move on to something else? My vet says the only thing he knows to do is prednisone. Being a nurse, I know long term use of this brings unwanted side effects. Where can I get the theophylline or maybe you can recommend a similar drug? Thank you. Brenda?
-
Theophylline ER 100mg appears to have been discontinued due to requirements related to complying with good manufacturing practices. The estimated availability is 2018, second quarter. There are other options available for your pet but these treatment regimens will differ depending on the indication. Please give the pharmacy a call and ask for a pharmacist to discuss options that may be suitable for your pet.

Hi, I've been getting theophylline (100MG tabs) from either my vet or Walgreen's for the past 3 years for my dog, who has COPD. The pharmacist at Walgreen's told me today that they will no longer be supplied with this drug by their vendor. They said the manufacturer is no longer making this drug. My question for you is, if I supply you with a written prescription from my vet, will you be able to provide this drug for my dog? I see that your theophylline is by Teva, which is not the same manufacturer as the drug i get from Walgreen's (can't remember the maker here at work). I'm worried that we won't be able to get this any more for my dog, and I'm hoping you will be a consistent supplier for me in the future. Thank, Bette?

Unfortunately, we have run into the same issue. All of the strengths are unavailable right now from the manufacturer. We have not heard that it is being discontinued but that could very well change. We apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you, VetRxDirect

My Vet prescribed my 16 pound cat one 200mg Theophylline ER per day. How could this dosage be correct. EVERY place I have looked at said the dosage should be 2mg per pound 1 to 3 times per day. Wouldn't that be 32 mg per dose??
-
Extended release theophylline would be dosed higher than the regular release dosage forms that can be given up to 3 times a day. The extended release formulations release the dose over the entire day compared to regular release dose that may lasts 6 to 12 hours depending on your cat’s medical condition and the specific formulation. Many times the theophylline dose can be based on the amount of theophylline in the body. Also, the dose can vary based on the age of the cat and how the cat’s liver is working. Without the full picture of the cat’s specific condition it is difficult to determine if this dose is correct. Your veterinarian may be able to give you more information of why this dose was prescribed. Thank you, VetRxDirect
