Ranitidine is a medication used to reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach. Too much acid production can lead to indigestion, vomiting, and the formation of stomach ulcers. This medication is used to treat stomach ulcers and to prevent further damage to the lining of the stomach or the gastrointestinal tract.
Ranitidine acts in another way by helping decrease the time it takes to empty the stomach. It acts as a prokinetic agent that may be especially helpful to increase the movement of the contents in the colon of cats.
Adverse effects from ranitidine are rare, but they can occur. Adverse effects that are similar to the human side effects include confusion and headaches.
Ranitidine is similar to cimetidine, but may be used as an alternative medication because ranitidine has been shown to have fewer drug interactions than cimetidine. Inform your pet's veterinarian about all medications given to your pet including non-prescription products and supplements.
In order to ensure maximum efficacy, it is important to not miss doses. Symptoms may reappear if doses are missed. If you miss giving your pet the dose, give it to your pet as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal schedule.
