Leflunomide is a medication that acts as an immunomodulator, or a substance that will affect how the immune system functions. Leflunomide works by inhibiting the production of T-cells and B-cells which are a part of the immune response. Sometimes, overproduction can occur without the need for the production of these cells. Overproduction can lead to inflammation and destruction of healthy tissues.
Leflunomide is used to treat a variety of conditions such as immune mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) or histiocytosis. It has also been used in combination with methotrexate to treat rheumatoid arthritis in cats. It should not be given to pregnant animals or animals with severe kidney failure. Although generally well tolerated, there may be some side effects associated with leflunomide.
