Diphenhydramine for Dogs and Cats
What is diphenhydramine HCl?
Diphenhydramine is an over the counter medication indicated to treat allergies, prevent motion sickness, and to make pets sleepy. It can be used in cats or dogs. It is available without a prescription but should only be used under veterinary supervision and recommendation. Diphenhydramine is the generic product for the human brand name product, Benadryl and the veterinary brand name product, Vetadryl. It is in the class called antihistamines, or allergy medications.
What side effects are associated with diphenhydramine?
The most prominent side effect in dogs is drowsiness, which is why it can be used to help your dog fall asleep. In cats, it can have the opposite effect and cause them to be excited. It may also cause dry mouth, less urination, diarrhea, vomiting, and loss of appetitie.
What pets should not take diphenhydramine:
Diphenhydramine should be avoided if your pet has glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, bladder obstruction, COPD, hyperthyroidism, heart disease, or hypertension. It is important to contact your veterinarian if your pet has any of those conditions, and to only use diphenhydramine if they have approved it.
Diphenhydramine is sold as an FDA approved generic drug. Brand varies from order to order and variation to variation. VetRxDirect is unable to guarantee which brand will be available at the time of order shipment.
