Q & A
-
Does this medication help in relieving pain?
-
Cosequin Maximum Strength’s active ingredients help to support healthy cartilage and joint mobility through a mild anti-inflammatory response that may help with collagen production, and reducing joint fluid and cartilage-destroying enzymes. This product does not target pain reduction specifically, however, these effects may help to alleviate potential joint discomfort. Please speak to your veterinarian to determine if this product would be a good fit for your dog.

If my dog currently doesn't have related issues & just want this purely for preventive & maintenance, do I still follow the initial dose and lessen the dose after 6 weeks? Or can I already start with the maintenance dose at the onset??
-
The initial loading dose for 4-6 weeks is to have glucosamine reach therapeutic levels. Starting at the maintenance dose may take longer to reach the therapeutic levels needed to provide clinical relief Before initiating or altering any supplement for your dog, you should contact your vet. They have the most up-to-date medical history of your dog and can provide the best recommendations for them. Please consult your veterinarian.

What is the loading and maintenance dosing??
-
According to the manufacturer’s product label, the recommended initial administration period is four to six weeks; however, some dogs may respond sooner. Initial 4-6 week administration period: 5-10 lbs 1 chew daily, 10-29 lbs 1 chew daily, 30-59 lbs 2 chews daily, 60 lbs and over 3 chews daily. Maintenance Level 5-10 lbs 1 chew every other day, 10-29 lbs. 1 chew every other day, 30-59 lbs 1 chew daily, 60 lbs and over 1-2 chews daily. Please note the Cosequin Minis are recommended by the manufacturer to be used in dogs under 10 pounds.

I have two large breed dogs (3 year old English Mastiff 210lbs and 4 year old Boerboel Mastiff 125lbs - back legs have knee deformities) The vet suggested Cosequin for both of our babies. What dose would I give these large breed dogs??
-
The manufacturer has specific recommendations including a loading dose period (4-6 weeks) and then maintenance doses. Their recommendations are listed below and are a general guide for administering the supplement to your dog, but your dog's veterinarian should make the ultimate decision on dosing. Loading Dose: 60+ lbs 3 chewables once daily Maintenance Dose: 60+ lbs 1-2 chewables once daily

My 14 lb poodle is currently taking Rimadyl for two weeks. Still limping. Would this be in addition or replacement for that medication? She is 7 years old. Thank you.?
-
Cosequin is a nutritional supplement that helps support joint health. It contains glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM. Rimadyl is a prescription medication that contains Carprofen, a non-steroidal pain and inflammation reliever. Because Cosequin is a supplement, and is not a replacement for a prescription medication like Rimadyl. It does not have any known drug interactions, but you should consult with your veterinarian before administering a new supplement.

My dog is currently on the 132 ct blue labeled bottle. I have the option to order 250ct in the orange labeled bottle but I am not sure if they are the same tablet.. How can I tell that the labels are all that is changing due to a change in tablet ct??
-
We believe based on your description of the bottles you currently have the 132 count Cosequin DS Plus MSM product, while the 250 count orange label bottle is the Cosequin DS, without MSM. It's best to ask your pet's veterinarian if the MSM is needed. We hope this information is helpful. Thank you.

what would be the difference of with perna version ??

Supplements that contain perna mussel have this additional active ingredient to help maintain healthy cartilage while protecting it. There is no published evidence supporting this claim so it’s always recommended to consult your veterinarian prior to starting any new supplements. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Are the soft chews really soft? I've purchased other products that have advertised as soft chews but turned out to be hard as a rock and hard for my 20 lb. dog to chew. It says he would take 1/2 daily loading and 1/2 every other day. Is that correct??
-
They do not seem to be rock hard and we have never had any complaints about them being hard for dogs to take. The recommended dose for a 20 pound dog would be 1 chew for the initial 4-6 week period and then 1 chew every other day for maintenance. Thank you, VetRxDirect
