What is Advantus (imidacloprid) for Dogs?

  • Advantus is a flavored, soft chew flea treatment medication for dogs and puppies.
  • Advantus contains imidacloprid, an insecticide that starts killing adult fleas within 1 hour to treat infestations. 

Why is Advantus used for dogs?

  • Advantus is a quick solution for controlling flea outbreaks on dogs and preventing spread to other household pets.

What else should I know about Advantus?

  • A single dose of Advantus kills fleas only on the dog, not in the environment.
  • Advantus does not kill flea eggs, pupa, or larvae. 
  • Advantus does not protect against ticks or mosquitoes. 
  • Advantus is not a preventative treatment. Consult your veterinarian about flea preventative products.
  • Give Advantus only to dogs.
  • Advantus is a flavored chew that does nto contain animal proteins.
  • Treat all pets in your household with a flea protection product. 
  • For use in dogs and puppies weighing at least 4 lbs and 10 weeks of age or older.
  • It may be used together with other products, including heartworm preventatives, corticosteroids, antibiotics, vaccines, deworming medications, and shampoos. 
  • Store at temperatures between 68-77 F (20-25 C).

What problems could my dog have with Advantus?

  • Side effects seen with this drug include vomiting, decreased appetite, decreased energy, soft stools, and difficulty walking. 
  • Advantus does not have an effect on fleas in the environment.

How do you use Advantus?

  • Weigh your dog before giving this medication to make sure you are using the right size for your dog. 
  • For dogs 4-22 lbs, give one 7.5 mg soft chew.
  • For dogs 23-110 lbs, give one 37.5 mg sift chew.
  • Do not give more than one tablet a day. 
  • Do not give to puppies younger than 10 weeks of age or dogs weighing less than 4 pounds.
