Potassa-Chew
Potassa-Chew (potassium gluconate) for Dogs and Cats
What is Potassa-Chew?
Potassa-Chew is a chewable potassium gluconate supplement for dogs and cats. It is used to treat low blood potassium (hypokalemia), which can be caused by multiple diseases. Potassa-Chew should only be used under the direct supervision of your pet's veterinarian, and only at their recommended dose and duration. Potassa-Chew is not indicated as a daily supplement in pets with normal or high potassium levels.
What benefits does Potassa-Chew provide?
Potassa-Chew can correct and maintain proper potassium levels in dogs or cats with pre-existing hypokalemia. It can also prevent hypokalemia in at-risk pets.
When should Potassa-Chew be avoided?
Potassa-Chew should not be used without a veterinarian's approval. It should also be avoided in pets with hyperkalemia, renal failure, severe renal impairment, severe hemolytic reactions, untreated Addison’s disease, acute dehydration, or GI motility impairment. Talk to your pet's veterinarian or VetRxDirect pharmacist before using Potassa-Chew if your pet currently takes ace inhibitors, digoxin, NSAIDs (such as Rimadyl, Norocarp, Previcox, etc), or potassium sparing diuretics such as spironolactone.

When we google "Potassium Gluconate", it is advised not to use in patients with UTI's or uncontrolled diabetes. (presumably this is potassium gluconate for humans...also states you should not lie down for 30 minutes after use). How is Potassium Gluconate different for dogs...specifically Potassa-Chew Potassium Gluconate chewable tablets??
-
The Potassium Gluconate is used as a potassium supplement that can be used in both humans and dogs. Potassa-Chew is a flavored formulation making it easier for the dog to take. The Potassa-Chew can cause some side effects that are mostly related to the potassium level becoming too high. Plumb’s Veterinary Drug Handbook states that gastrointestinal and heart disturbance side effects can happen at these high potassium levels. Make sure to keep your follow-up appointments with your veterinarian so they can monitor potassium levels in your dog. Please consult your veterinarian regarding any further questions or concerns regarding this medication in your dog.
