  • Q:

Do I need a prescription for virbac?  I have a small kennel. Can I buy a whole bottle vs per pill? If so, what is the cost for the 114mg bottle?
Asked on 1/19/2015 by Susan H from Unionville, TN, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

      Susan,

The Virbantel does not require a prescription. It is priced per tablet so you can buy 50 tablets that come in a bottle but it would still be sold per tablet. The 114mg tablets are $8.99 per tablet so for the bottle of 50, it would be roughly $450.

  • Q:

Does the owner as well need to take medicine at the same time as the dog deworms especially if they sleep togethe
Asked on 9/17/2014 by Breezy from Port.or.

    1 answer

    • A:

Virbantel is a prescription-only product for dogs that is not approved for human use. It is important to remember to never share prescription medications as they are prescribed on an individual-patient basis. If you are concerned about your own health, it would be important to speak with a medical doctor in order to determine the need for treatment and to select an appropriate medication.

  • Q:

I gave my 17 pound Boston Terrier one dose on 3/22 for roundworms. She is now exhibiting the same symptoms again, although I took her to the vet and they said there were no eggs in her stool. Should I redose her?
Asked on 4/26/2014 by Maga from Clermont, FL, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

      Mega,

Virbantel is an over-the-counter medication that is effective in treatment and control of roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms. Re-treatment may be necessary as determined by laboratory fecal examination or if you dog is in an area where reinfection is likely to occur. In this case, your veterinarian did not receive a positive test, but if symptoms continue you should follow-up with your pet's veterinary clinic. For guidance and usage on Virbantel please contact your veterinarian.

  • Q:

Is 30 mg Virantel Tablet safe for 7 pound cat?
Asked on 4/10/2014 by Kerry from Bedford, VA, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

      Kerry,

Virbantel (pyrantel pamoate/ praziquantel) is an over-the-counter dewormer used to treat a variety of parasites found in dogs. Manufacturer states the medication is used for worm control in dogs. The manufacturer does not state dosing for use in cats. However, there have been cases of this medication being used in cats and veterinarians may prescribe this for off-label usage in cats. Contact your cat’s veterinarian for further assistance regarding use and dosage.

Asked on 3/1/2014 by poppyseed from San Diego, CA, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

      poppyseed,

It is most important to know this product is not a treatment or preventative of canine heartworms. Virbantel is an intestinal parasite pet medication for the treatment and control of:
      - Roundworms (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina)
      - Hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, Ancylostoma braziliense, and Uncinaria stenocephala)
      - Tapeworms (Dipylidium caninum, Taenia pisiformis)

  • Q:

I bought this for my cats. It hasn't come it yet, but I see now that it says for dogs. Can I still give this to my cats for tapeworms?
    Asked on 2/1/2014 by T1T2

    1 answer

    • A:

Virbantel (active ingredients praziquantel and pyrantel pamoate) is used for both cats and dogs to kill tapeworms, hookworms, and roundworms. It can be given with or without food, in one treatment, though the manufacturer recommends a second treatment in 2 to 4 weeks if re-infection is likely. It is also best to treat all pets in an environment to help prevent re-infection.

My vet prescribed virbantel 30mg for my cat (1 pill now and another in 3 weeks). I would like to know if this also works on cats!
    Asked on 10/11/2013 by Barbara

    1 answer

    • A:

      Barbara,

Virbantel includes the two drugs, pyrantel pamoate and praziquantel.  The brand name Virbantel product is marketed by the manufacturer for dogs only, however both of the drugs individually or in combination with other drugs can be used in cats and are effective for deworming treatment.

  • Q:

could heart guard and verbantel given within a couple of days of each other cause poisoning or severe liver reaction
    Asked on 9/21/2013 by Barbara

    1 answer

    • A:

      Barbara,

Virbantel and Heartgard Plus are generally safe and would not cause poisoning separately or together. Both products contain pyrantel, which has a very wide margin of safety. Heartgard also contains ivermectin which is very safe. Virbantel also contains praziquantel which is also very safe. It is always a good idea to separate treatments like these by several days or weeks if possible. Any medicine can cause idiosyncratic (rare) reactions. Ask your pet's veterinarian about other questions regarding these medications.

      Thank you,

I thought this med was now an over the counter med why can't I get it.
    Asked on 8/17/2013 by Michelle

    1 answer

    • A:

      Michelle,

Virbantel is an OTC item and can be ordered without authorization from your pet's veterinarian.

Still, it is important to receive consultation from your pet's veterinarian before starting any OTC or prescription pet med.

Inexpensive worm treatment

Comments about Virbac Virbantel (pyrantel pamoate/praziquantel):

I needed to deworm all 5 of my dogs without having to incur vet bills. I know what tapeworms look like, so I didn't need a diagnosis, only the treatment. This product got rid of the tapeworms for a reasonable price and quick delivery. I will probably buy this product on a regular basis, because worms tend to come back.

Comments about Virbac Virbantel (pyrantel pamoate/praziquantel):

I have multiple dogs and try to keep them on the same deworming schedule. My vet gave me this for one dog. I was so glad to find that I could get it for the others without bringing them all in for a check. Their coats improved dramatically, weren't dragging themselves, and general energy increased. Great product!
