Vetmedin (pimobendan) Chewable Tablets for Congestive Heart Failure in Dogs

Veterinarians prescribe Vetmedin for dogs with congestive heart failure. This medication is effective for many dogs because is helps the heart work more efficiently which eases the workload on the heart muscle and may help the dog live longer and have a better quality of life.

  • Treats mild or moderate congestive heart failure in dogs
  • Helps the heart pump blood more efficiently
  • May lengthen life span
  • Chewable tablets for easy dosing
  • New 2.5mg and 10mg tablet sizes now available

Vetmedin is different than many congestive heart failure medications because it works in two ways to reduce stress on the heart muscle and improve its ability to pump blood. Prescription Vetmedin dilates the blood vessels that move blood away from the heart and it also strengthens contractions in the heart muscle.  The active ingredient in Vetmedin is Pimobendan.  Many dogs that are suffering from congestive heart failure and take Vetmedin experience improved quality of life and greater longevity. Vetmedin is available in convenient chewable tablets.

  • Q:

My dog weighs nine pounds what size of heart murmur medication is right?
    Asked on 6/3/2015 by Cheryla

    1 answer

    • A:

The dosing recommendations for Vetmedin are 0.5 mg/kg daily in two divided doses according to our resources. Following these guidelines, an expected dose would be approximately one-half to one 1.25mg tablet twice daily. However, these guidelines do not replace the recommendations from your veterinarian. See your veterinarian for dosing Vetmedin in your dog.

      Lani,

Both of these are heart medications but they have different active ingredients which makes them different. We suggest to consult with your veterinarian to see which medication would be best for your pet.

  • Q:

Can vetmedin be used with selegiline without interaction?
Asked on 9/11/2014 by angelsmommy from North Carolina, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

Selegiline does not have a reported interaction with Vetmedin (pimobendan), but also is not one of the specific medications labeled as safe to use with Vetmedin either. Due to this lack of information, it would be important to speak with your pet’s veterinarian before using these medications together in order to weigh out risk versus benefit and determine the safety and appropriateness of adding this medication.

My dog is a silky terrier and is 16lbs. What is the dosing supposed to be
Asked on 7/12/2014 by Susanb from NC, United States

    1 answer

At 16 pounds your dog will most likely require a total of 3 tablets per day divided into two portions and administered 12 hours apart. Your veterinarian will determine the appropriate dose for your pet when considering the severity of disease and pet’s health.

  • Q:

Am currently giving 9 lb. Chihuahua 0.75 ml of liquid Pimbendan(spelling on bottle) every 12 hours. If I were to get the chewables, how would I give the same dosage?
    Asked on 12/12/2013 by Darla

    1 answer

    • A:

      Darla,

Without knowing the strength of the liquid you are giving (how many milligrams per milliliter) it would be impossible to say which tablet would be the same dose.  Vetmedin, the brand name for pimobenda tablets, comes in 1.25mg and 5mg tablets.  As it is a prescription medication, it would require approval from your dog's veterinarian to dispense the tablets.

      Thank you,

  • Q:

can vetmedin be used for a dog who is taking furosemide and elapril for heartworms?
    Asked on 10/31/2013 by Betty

    1 answer

    • A:

      Betty,

Vetmedin is commonly used with enalapril and furosemide in dogs for treating heart conditions such as heart failure.  Monitor for side effects such as decreased appetite, lethargy, and diarrhea.  It is ideal to give the Vetmedin approximately 1 hour prior to feeding.

      Thank you,

My Chihuahua was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy 18 months ago. With Vetmedin, Enalapril, & Lasix, she would not be annoying me at 2:30 in the morning, wanting to be petted. And I would not change that for anything. The little one has been with me since January 2003. Love her, and am so very grateful for her Vet in diagnosing with ECHO he cardiac failure.

Comments about Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedin (pimobendan) Chewable Tablets:

My six pound Chi, who is six years old, developed heart failure. I'm familiar to the symptoms, so I got her to the vet right away. The vet prescribed three meds. I first declined this one because out of the vets office it was pricey. So I went back for a follow-up and filled the Vetmedin. Within two days, my little girls was a brand new dog. Thank you for saving my dog.

Vetmedin is not absorbed properly unless it is given on an empty stomach. Old supply from Boehringer Ingelheim made in Germany said to give 1-2 hours after a meal, and 1 hour before food. My last 28 bottles have been made in Mexico, and the insert does not address this. Fast your dog for best assimilation of Vetmedin.
