  • Q:

I noticed your write-up only mentions injecting cats. My vet has given me the supplies to sub-subcutaneously inject my Pomeranian twice daily at home due to a kidney problem. Can we assume the same comments apply to dogs?
Asked on 5/22/2015 by KPC6NDB from Upland, CA, United States

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

Lactated ringers solution is a product that can be used in dogs in addition to cats. This solution contains electrolytes and helps rehydrate certain pets with renal insufficiency/failure. Talk with your veterinarian about the best treatment option for your Pomeranian's kidney problem.

The Lactated Ringers are on a nationwide shortage right now. We usually get more every few days but it is not guaranteed. We do update the website as soon as we are able to get more in so we suggest checking back every couple of days.

  • Q:

Can anyone purchase this fluid directly from you or only vets? My 15 year old kitty gets fluid therapy twice a week. She uses 1,000 weekly and the cost of just her fluid bag is over $33.00 per week.
Asked on 4/3/2015 by Cat Momma

    1 answer

    • A:

Yes, we do sell to pet owners. This does require a prescription so we would have to get it approved by the veterinarian. These fluids are also on a nation wide shortage so we can only fill 4 bags per pet every 4 weeks

VetRxDirect is my go to for the Lactated Ringers, the IV Venoset and the 20 gauge needles I suddenly found myself needing to give subcutaneous fluids to my darling 19 year old kitty with the onset of kidney disease. Subq'ing was never anything I imagined myself having to administer, but it helps my little guy so much and just knowing I have a place to obtain the necessary items, at a very reduced price, that ships quickly is such a relief!

Although the price was the best I could find from a reputable source for IV fluids and supplies, I was disappointed in the actual products received. the lactated ringers solution was not as pictured! it barely had markings to judge the amount of fluids used, it did not have the single plug for the insert of the IV set, rather it had 2 injectable plugs that I had to call to find out how to insert the IV set into. I found the whole thing rather disconcerting especially under the circumstances. When one finds that their little darling is going into renal failure and needs fluids it is dauting enough without having the vet supplies be complicated more than necessary. I didn't get what was pictured on either the IV set nor the fluids. Ok, the needles were correct. I will be using a different source next time. I'm having a terrible time judging the amount of fluid being given, something I didn't have a problem when getting the proper bag from the vet - the one that is pictured.

Pros

  • Great quality

Cons

    Best Uses

    • I use for our cat with kidney disease

Comments about Abbott Animal Health Lactated Ringers Solution:

We use the LRS for our cat with kidney disease. The quality of the product has always been great and with giving her subcutaneous fluids regularly, she has lived way longer than what was expected. Without this service we wouldn't be able to afford to do this for our cat that I've had for 19 years.

Life Saving for Pets, Great Price

    By

    from Orlando FL

    Verified Buyer

Comments about Abbott Animal Health Lactated Ringers Solution:

Lactated Ringers are what pet owners typically call "subcutaneous fluids" as prescribed by your vet. You slip a needle just under the skin of your pet, and allow a prescribed amount of fluid to flow in. A fluid pouch builds up and is absorbed into the body over the next few hours. On a short term basis it can give a boost of rehydration to a pet who is sick and needs help to recover. On a long term basis it is often used for cats/dogs in Chronic Renal Failure (CRF). The subcu fluids help flush the kidneys and help the animal feel better and live healthier for a much longer time with an improved quality of life. Your vet can show you how easy it is to do. Typically it is much cheaper to do this at home than at the vet's office, and once you get the hang of it, it's easier for your pet.

Frequently out of stock; Not a DEHP free bag

    By

    from Mesa AZ

Comments about Abbott Animal Health Lactated Ringers Solution:

Much needed product, great price, when in stock. Every time I go to reorder, I have to wait 1-2 weeks for it to come back in stock. Also, it used to qualify for free shipping, but the last 3 times I ordered, it no longer qualified. However, this is the only place I can find the 250 mL bags. Even my vet doesn't carry the small bags. My cat only gets 50-75 mL every other day, so with the smaller bags, I never have to waste any. So I will continue to buy here. I would have given 4 stars if they had it in stock more reliably. And I would have given 5 stars if it came in a DEHP free bag! (But that is a manufacturer issue, not a seller issue).
