Tobramycin Eye Drops for Use in Pets

Tobramycin eye drops are used in many animals to treat bacterial infections in the eye, eyelids, or conjunctiva. Tobramycin in considered bactericidal, which means that it kills bacteria. It does so by stopping the production of proteins within the bacteria. When giving your pet tobramycin eye drops, it is important not to touch the tip of the dropper on the eye. This can contaminate the eye drops for future applications.

Adverse Effects

  • renal toxicity
  • ear damage

Use caution in seeing-eye, herding, or dogs for the hearing impaired, as tobramycin can cause irreversible ear damage. Also, it is important to monitor renal function. Kidney damage is usually reversible once the drug is discontinued.

If you miss giving your pet a dose, give it to him as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal schedule.
