S-Adenosyl

Many people use the supplement S-Adenosyl, commonly known as SAMe, and swear by the results. Now pets can benefit form this natural supplement too. SAMe is a detoxifier and antioxidant with many properties that help dogs and cats.

  •  Supports healthy liver function
  •  Relieves pain and swelling due to osteoarthritis
  •  Improves cognitive function
  •  Snap Tabs variation provides four equal parts for a wide range of weights.

SAMe is best known for improving liver function and metabolic activity in dogs and cats. But this powerful supplement containing milk thistle does much more. SAMe helps treat cognitive disorders, depression, and hepatitis. It’s also effective in treating osteoarthritis by reducing inflammation and helping to regenerate joint tissue.

  • Q:

Is this for cats over 9 lbs?
    Asked on 9/27/2014 by snickers

    1 answer

    • A:

S-adenosyl dosage is weight-based and comes in a variety of tablet strengths. Per the manufacturer’s dosing recommendations, one S-adenosyl 100 mg tablet daily would be appropriate for both cats and dogs weighing less than 20 lbs. Increased strengths would be recommended for dogs weighing greater than 20 lbs. Since each pet is unique, your pet’s veterinarian would also be helpful in choosing an appropriate supplement and appropriate dose for your pet.

  • Q:

Is milk thistle the same as Sam E? I ntoiced it was more affordable? My dog has high liver enzymes.
Asked on 9/18/2014 by IzzyD from Tucson, AZ, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

Although both are used as supplements in liver dysfunction, S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) is not the same as milk thistle. SAMe is a molecule naturally made in the body, which helps in brain, liver, and other tissue function. Supplemental SAMe is thought to increase liver cell function in animals with decreased liver function. Milk thistle (silymarin) is thought to improve liver function by acting as an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, protecting the liver cells from toxins as well as increasing the amount of protein liver cells made. Milk thistle is commonly listed in products as Silybin A and B, which are extracts of silymarin. SAMe and milk thistle can be used together or alone. It would be important to discuss with your pet’s veterinarian in order to select the safest and most appropriate supplement for your pet.

  • Q:

i've do a research and i've found an article said not to give milk with SAMe for cat . Why?
Asked on 5/17/2014 by blicious from Thailand

    1 answer

    • A:

There is not an apparent drug-food interaction with SAMe and milk. However, SAMe should be given on an empty stomach, at least one hour before feeding your cat, because food and other products, such as milk, may decrease the effectiveness of SAMe. This is because they may decrease the absorption of SAMe in the GI tract. You should be able to feed your cat milk after an hour of giving SAMe.

Asked on 3/6/2014 by Boj1 from Fairfax county va

    • A:

We are not aware of any liquid options for the milk thistle or SAMe supplements. You may want to check in with your dog's veterinarian on additional administration options or other supplements that may be easier to administer.

  • Q:

are these the non chewable pills?
Asked on 1/24/2014 by davec from Phoenix, AZ, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

We carry both forms of the S-Adenosyl supplement, the non-chewable tablets and the chewable. If you are looking for chewable tablets, they are available in one strength, the 225, and are listed as snap tabs, which break apart to allow for dosing at strengths other than 225. The non-chewable come in three strengths, 100, 225, and 425.

  • Q:

What is the difference between the subject items? My vet had ordered the S-Adenosyl-100 and liver enzymes have gone down from 1200 to 900 but would the 425 accomplish more?
    Asked on 11/20/2013 by Donna

    1 answer

    • A:

      Donna,

The appropriate dosing for S-Adenosyl is determined by your pet's weight.

S-Adenosyl 100 is dosed as follows:

      Cats: 1 tablet daily

Dogs under 20 pounds: 1 tablet daily

Dogs 21 to 40 pounds: 2 tablets daily

Dogs 41 to 60 pounds: 3 tablets daily

Dogs over 60 pounds: 4 tablets daily

The S-Adenosyl 425 is dosed as follows:

Dogs 40 to 80 pounds: 1 tablet daily

Dogs over 80 pounds: 2 tablets daily

The number following the name indicates the strength of the supplement.  The S-Adenosyl 100 has 100mg of s-adenosyl-L-methionine per tablet and the S-Adenosyl 425 has 425mg of s-adenosyl-L-methionine.

      Thank you,

  • Q:

Is the human supplement s-adenosyl safe for dogs
    Asked on 10/14/2013 by Sheila

    1 answer

    • A:

      Sheila,

S-Adenosyl methionine (SAMe) is a natural-occurring chemical found in the body and is classified as a nutritional supplement and not a pharmaceutical drug. This active chemical, SAMe, will be the same for both animal and human products but additional supplements and inactive ingredients may be present in these products. Due to the variety of SAMe-containing products that exist, we recommend you discuss the product with your veterinarian to verify dosing and safety.

      Thank you,

I don't know whether I can credit SAMe-425 alone for the improvement (I also began supplementing my dog's diet with dandelion smoothies and kefir, increased her dose of vitamin E and fish oil, and broke up her home-cooked diet to 5 small meals per day), but after 3 months of the combined regimen, my 8-year-old blue heeler's liver enzymes went from off-the-charts high to high normal. Now, 5 months later, the values are completely within normal - about a 300% drop from when she was first diagnosed with advanced hepatobiliary disease. Her doctor said that she'd never seen anything like this. Again, I made several dietary changes at the same time she started taking SAMe-425, so I can't say this medication alone is responsible for the dramatic improvement. Still, much credit has to be given to SAMe-425, since previously a healthy, organic, home-cooked diet had not offset her serious liver problems. I definitely recommend it.

Comments about Sogeval S-Adenosyl (SAMe):

My dog has been on this for elevated liver enzymes which was related to food allergies. We have been giving this to her for some time, once daily. This plus diet modification has resulted in normalization of liver values. Of interesting note is our previous dog was on it too, vet advised, for cognitive changes associated with aging, that dog lived to 17 years old and it improved his mentation as manifested by not aimlessly wandering in house.

My dachshund has a history of having high liver enzymes (app. over 1400 in early 2014).now in Dec. 2014 her enzymes dropped to over 600. Also, she was diagnosed with Cushing's Disease which keeps her level of enzymes high - S-Adenosyl(SAMe) helps keep the level down. Really Helpful!

I'm so glad I discovered this website the prices are so much more reasonable than what I was paying at my vets.
