Propalin (phenylpropanolamine) Chewable Tablets for Dogs with Urinary Incontinence

 
Easy to administer chewable tablet contains phenylpropanolamine (PPA).   
 

Because Propalin™ is classified as a controlled substance in our home state of Iowa, prescriptions for Propalin™ are only valid for 6 months.  We must obtain new prescriptions from your veterinarian after 6 months.  Any refills exceeding 6 months from the prescription date are not valid for this medication. 

Why has my veterinarian prescribed Propalin™?

Phenylpropanolamine is prescribed to treat dogs that are unable to hold their urine, a condition known as “urinary incontinence.” It is also prescribed to manage nasal congestion.  Phenylpropanolamine is classified as an alpha adrenergic stimulant.  

 

How do I give Propalin™?

First, READ THE LABEL CAREFULLY.

 

If you give your pet one dose a day, try giving it at bedtime to ensure that the effects last through the night.

 

Try to give this medication at the same time each day.

 

Try not to miss giving any doses.

 

Give Phenylpropanolamine to your pet as directed by your veterinarian.

 

DO NOT give your pet more medicine than directed.

 

DO NOT give your pet medicine more often than prescribed.

 

DO NOT stop giving your pet Phenylpropanolamine unless directed by your veterinarian. Plan ahead to ensure you have the refills you need.

 

It may take several days before this medication takes effect.

 

If I miss a dose what do I do?

If you miss a dose, apply the dose as soon as possible. If you miss applying a dose by several days, then contact your veterinarian for advice.  Never apply two doses at one time.

 

How do I store Propalin™?

Keep this medicine out of reach of children.

 

Store this medicine at room temperature in dry, cool place. Keep this medication away from heat and direct sunlight.

 

Do not store this medicine in damp places, in the bathroom, or near the kitchen sink. The medicine can break down if exposed to moisture or heat.

 

What are the potential side effects of Propalin™?  

While taking this medication your pet may experience a loss of appetite, restlessness, irritability, tremors, fast heart rate, high blood pressure and/or urine retention. If these symptoms appear excessive or persist, contact your veterinarian.

 

Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.

 

What about possible drug interactions?

Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any other medications you are giving your pet.

 

It’s not uncommon for your veterinarian to prescribe two different medications, which may cause a drug interaction to occur. If this happens, your veterinarian may change the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely.

 

The following drugs can potentially interact with Phenylpropanolamine: tricyclic antidepressants, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, halogenated anesthetic agents, ephedrine, chlorpromazine, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, reserpine, and ganglionic blocking agents.
