Posatex Otic Suspension

Those ears that give your dog such character can also cause trouble. Dogs have deep ear canals and breeds with long ear flaps are prone to ear infections because their ears don't get enough airflow. If your dog gets an ear infection due to bacteria or yeast, ask your veterinarian about broad spectrum, triple-action Posatex Otic suspension.

  •  Combination antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory
  •  Convenient once-a-day treatment for just seven days
  •  Fast acting for quick relief

Prescription Posatex eases the inflammation and pain caused by otitis externa in dogs. The eardrops contain a combination of three powerful medicines: the broad-spectrum antibiotic orbifloxacin; mometasone furoate monohydrate, an anti-inflammatory; and an anti-fungal called posaconazole.  Posatex is so powerful that just one dose a day for seven days should clear the infection.

What you should know about Posatex Otic Suspension:

  • Shake well before using.
  • Follow dosing directions exactly - don’t give your dog more medication than directed and don’t skip doses.

Asked on 4/5/2015 by Mollys mom

  • Q:

My Posatex for dogs expired on 3/14...is it still effective? (swimmers ear)
Asked on 3/30/2015 by jill smith from Phoenix, AZ, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

The expiration date on a prescription medication is determined by the manufacturer. The usage of any drug product beyond the manufacturer determined expiration date is not advised. Contact your veterinarian to determine if your pet needs a new diagnosis to ensure proper treatment. A drug that is subpotent or not the correct antibiotic or antifungal to treat a current infection, will delay proper treatment and lead to a worse outcome for your dog.

  • Q:

My dogs vet has her on Posatex 15g once daily for 14 days, and after re-check is prescribing another 14 days.  Is this O.K. ?
Asked on 1/25/2015 by katz from Palm Beach, FL

    1 answer

    • A:

The manufacturer recommended treatment course for Posatex is 7 days. However, the dosage varies depending on the weight of your pet. Veterinarians may use the same product for an additional treatment course if the remaining bacteria and/or yeast present in the ear, have been determined to be susceptible to the drug(s) in the medication. However, a different medication is often prescribed when an antibiotic/antifungal medication has failed. Your pet may benefit from having further tests performed on his infected ear(s) to determine the bacteria and/or yeast causing the infection. Please consult your veterinarian.

  • Q:

Is this okay for cats? My cats have mites and the vet gave me posatex otic suspension for dog only reads on bottle
Asked on 3/24/2014 by Frog from Fort Walton Beach, FL, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

You are correct that Posatex is indicated only for use in the ears of dogs. Posatex would likely not help with mites, as it is indicated only for outer ear infections caused by bacteria and fungus. We would recommend that you consult your cats' veterinarian again about the mites in your cats' ears so he or she can prescribe or recommend an appropriate treatment.

what happens if dog swallows some of this med. by accident?
Asked on 2/18/2014 by gerry from Texas, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

      Gerry,

Posatex contains an antibiotic, antifungal, and a corticosteroid. Ingestion of the medication may cause an upset stomach as well as an increase in thirst, appetite, or frequency of urination. We advise that you contact the manufacturer Merck (800-521-5767) or your dog's veterinarian for further advice.

  • Q:

Do I need a prescription for this product? Where does it ship from?
Asked on 2/12/2014 by SandyC from Knoxville, TN

    1 answer

    • A:

      Sandy,

Yes, Posatex does require a prescription from the veterinarian. The easiest way for us to obtain a prescription from your pet's veterinarian is for them to fax a prescription to us. Once an order is placed, we send a request for the prescription via fax to the veterinarian that you listed when you checked out. Most clinics are willing to approve the fax and send it back to us if your pet is up-to-date on exams and bloodwork.

Some clinics have policies in place that prevent them from answering faxed requests; if your clinic has a policy like this, they may choose to issue you a written prescription. Like your local human pharmacy, we can accept written prescriptions issued to you by the veterinarian, though we have to have the original so it needs to be mailed to us. Pharmacy law prevents us from accepting a copy (including a fax or scan) of a prescription that has been issued to you.

We ship all orders from Coralville, Iowa, where we're located.

      Thank you,
      VetRxDirect

  • Q:

Does posatex Otic or RxMometamax Otic Suspension require a RX?
    Asked on 11/18/2013 by Lori

    1 answer

    • A:

      Lori,

Both Posatex Otic Suspension and Mometamax Otic Suspension require a prescription from a licensed veterinarian.  Veterinarians can provide approval in a couple of different ways.  Once an order is placed we will fax over to your pet's veterinarian for approval, unless you have indicated that you will be mailing a prescription.  Whether you are mailing, or your pet's veterinarian is faxing the approval to us, once we receive the prescription, we will process the order and ship it out.

      Thank you,

      VetRxDirect

Is this medication safe for cats?
    Asked on 8/25/2013 by Gail

    1 answer

    • A:

      Gail,

Posatex Otic Suspension is only labeled for use in dogs. However, many pet medicines, including medicine labeled for humans, may be used off-label in cats on the order and advice of your cat's veterinarian.

Comments about Merck Animal Health Posatex Otic Suspension:

I bought the product a couple weeks ago because my dog was prescribe this due to an ear infection. Before applying the product I had the vet do and ear flush just so that when I applied the medicine it would be on a clean as possible ear. My poor baby's ear was red and swollen and I could see crusty stuff starting to come out I applied as directed on package and by the next day there was a definite difference his redness was down to a pink color and the swelling was down even tho per vet instructions it said to apply once a day for 10 days I did not feel the need to complete the 10 day dosage because by the 3rd application his ear was back to normal. I recomend this to other pet parents :)
