What is Mirtazapine?

Mirtazapine is a medication used commonly in cats and dogs to stimulate their appetite or to reduce vomiting episodes due to chemotherapy treatments. It can be used in combination with other products, but is also often used alone. When used, most veterinarians use it at the lowest possible dose in order to decrease the chance of side effects.

Side Effects of Mirtazapine:

  • sedation
  • increased affection in cats
  • increased meowing in cats

When used in humans, higher doses cause the medication to lose it effectiveness in stimulating appetite. This can also occur in your pet, so it is important to give only the prescribed dose. At first, your pet's veterinarian may start at a lower dose and try different doses in order to achieve maximum effect for your pet.

It is important to report continuation of anorexic symptoms or vomiting episodes as well as excessive tiredness and vocalization. All could mean that your pet is not at the most effective dose for treatment.

  • Q:

My vet prescribed one-half of a 7.5 mg tablet for my cat. Your tabs are 15 mg in size. Can I easily break one of these into quarters (4 pieces), or are they of a size where it's not feasible? Also, what exactly is the size of them anyway? Thanks!
Asked on 2/19/2015 by OHenry from Naperville, IL, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

Depending on the manufacturer, the tablets are either round or oblong. They are scored in half but splitting any further could be difficult. The size of the round tablet is about the size of the end of a push pin and the oblong ones are a little bigger.

  • Q:

Are there any studies available that show contraindication of long term (every 3 days) use of a low dose to assist a cat with appetite stimulation? This cat has chronic renal failure(stage 2), IBD, hypertension.
    Asked on 9/20/2013 by Deborah

    1 answer

    • A:

      Deborah,

Based on the medical information provided, mirtazapine could be used to help stimulate your pet's appetite. It is recommended for pets with kidney impairment that the veterinarian is monitoring your cat while on mirtazapine therapy. Studies are limited regarding the use of mirtazapine for animal use so your veterinarian will be best suited for monitoring your pet's drug therapy.

      Thank you,

Comments about Aurobindo Mirtazapine:

I have a 13-year old Australian Cow-dog that is suffering severe weight loss due to loss of appetite caused by stomach cancer. Shanny's weight has dropped from 64 lbs. to 48 lbs. She had always been full of energy but became very lethargic. However, since giving her a daily dose of 1 Mirtazapine 15mg her appetite has improved and she is again showing a more lively behavior. Comments about Aurobindo Mirtazapine:

Mirtazapine does just exactly what it's supposed to... my kitty Evette now eats regularly rather than pick at every bite, and has greatly decreased her vomiting episodes. Exactly what we needed to hopefully get some weight back on her tiny body.
