What is Meloxidyl Oral Suspension?

Meloxidyl is a product containing the medication meloxicam in a liquid/suspension formulation, making it easy to dose and use. The active ingredient Meloxicam is a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID) that reduces inflammation in the body. Meloxidyl should only be used in dogs and is commonly prescribed for dogs with osteoarthritis and those who have undergone surgery.

What risks are associated with Meloxidyl?

Meloxidyl hasn’t been studied in dogs under 6 months of age, pregnant dogs, or lactating dogs: Use carefully in these groups. As with most NSAID’s there is a risk for kidney damage, stomach bleeding, and liver damage. These risks are more often seen with long term use and also seen more prominently when combined with diuretics or corticosteroids. Talk to a VetRxDirect pharmacist or your pet's veterinarian about possible drug interactions with Meloxidyl. The less severe and more common side effects of Meloxidyl include vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and blood stools. If your pet is experiencing severe depression or signs of stomach bleeding contact your pet's veterinarian immediately.

How to give Meloxidyl Oral Suspension:

  1. Shake the bottle thoroughly and remove the bottle’s top.
  2. Select the right dosing syringe by your dog’s weight. Dogs weighing 15 lbs or more should use the large dosing syringe, and dogs weighing less than 15 lbs should use the small syringe.
  3. Insert the selected syringe into the top of the bottle of Meloxidyl.
  4. Turn the bottle upside down and pull the plunger back until the black line on the plunger lines up with the dose your pet's veterinarian has prescribed.
  5. Turn the bottle back over (right side up) and twist/pull the syringe from the bottle.
  6. Give the Meloxidyl dose directly to your dog by mouth or you may also put it on their food.
