Leukeran used in the treatment of some types of cancer in pets.

What is Leukeran?

Leukeran is the brand name product for chlorambucil which is a medication used in certain cancers and other conditions in pets. The most common side effects associated with Leukeran include blood abnormalities, immune abnormalities, and stomach upset/damage. In dogs, Leukeran can also cause shaven fur to grow back much slower. It is important to note how Leukeran depresses your pet’s immune system, so it is essential to keep your pet at low risk of any other infection or illness while they are taking Leukeran. If your pet experiences abnormal bleeding, bruising, urination, depression, infection or shortness of breath while taking Leukeran, you should contact your pet's veterinarian immediately.

  • Q:

I've been told that when our cat pees and poops in the litter box that said pees and poops have to be isolated for 48 hours.  I heard this from a pharmacist; is this information accurate?  We have a multi-cat household, so this would be impossible.
Asked on 6/8/2015 by Cari from Maine

    1 answer

    • A:

Leukeran and its metabolites can be hazardous to other animals and people that come in contact with them. It is recommended that all bodily wastes be handled wearing disposable gloves and that the waste be placed in a sealable plastic bag before putting in the trash. These precautions should be taken on the day(s) your cat receives the drug and then for approximately 24 hours after ceasing the use of Leukeran. If there are multiple cats using the same litter box, the urine and feces could be potentially harmful to other cats if they come into direct contact with it. Though the risk is low (as cat’s tend to avoid the urine and feces of other cats), it’s important to remove the urine or feces as soon as possible to prevent exposure to the other cats. We would also recommend to contact your veterinarian for further suggestions regarding this matter.

  • Q:

how long will it take to process and ship the leukeran?
Asked on 3/19/2015 by thebd from Atlanta, GA, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

The leukeran is a refrigerated product so it does get shipped via next day shipping but it does require a prescription so we would have to get that from the veterinarian before we are able to ship it. It usually only takes a couple of days but it does depend on how long it takes the veterinarian to respond to our fax.

  • Q:

Regarding Chlorambucil for my dog: A new pharmacy we are trying does not require refrigeration for shipping or storage, yet the original source has always directed refrigeration for both. Why the difference? And what are the risks for not refrigerating?
Asked on 2/7/2015 by MariahsMom from Los Angeles County, CA, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

The pharmacist contacted the manufacturer and a representative stated that Leukeran MUST be shipped with ice at the 2° to 8°C (36° to 46°F). This is important due to the possibility of drug decomposition thus not being effective. We recommend having your product shipped with ice and stored as advised by the manufacturer.

It requires next day shipping and is shipped in a small cooler with ice packs.

  • Q:

Our 5 lb. dog takes c-chlorambucil 2mg capsule every 72 hours & 1/2 of a VSL#3 capsule (inside medicine, not capsule itself per vet's instruction) daily for (suspected) lymphangiectasia. Could this cause her to gain weight?  She eats a low fat dog food.
Asked on 7/18/2014 by Gracie1 from Gaithersburg, MD, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

Typically, weight gain does not occur when taking either medication but bloating is possible with VSL capsules. If you suspect your dog has gained weight or is experiencing some bloating we recommend following up with your veterinarian.

  • Q:

My cat will not take chlorambcil orally any more but my vet says not to order the topical because the dosage is unpredictable - but since my cat spits it out that is too. What do you think of topical?
Asked on 6/5/2014 by Lucy2 from Austin, TX, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

      Lucy,

Since the topical dosage form of chlorambucil (brand name Leukeran) is possibly unpredictable there is an increased risk of dose variability for each dose given to your pet. VetRxDirect only carries the commercially-available Leukeran. Contact your cat's veterinarian to determine the next course of action for your cat’s drug therapy.

  • Q:

How long can chlorambucil be left out of the refrigerator? What is the maximum temperature for storage?
Asked on 5/23/2014 by RJC22 from Massachusetts, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

The tablets should be stored in light-resistant, well-closed containers in the refrigerator where the temperature is between 2-8C (36-46F). The tablets should be kept from freezing. The manufacturer has information indicating that the tablets can be stored at a maximum of 30C (86F) up to one week and still maintain potency.

  • Q:

our vet has us giving leukeran to our dog to reduce a severe infection caused by intestinal lymphangiectasia which is out of control... what are your thoughts of using this drug for this... we are also giving injections of dexamethasone SP 4mg/ml also.
    Asked on 4/26/2014 by AnnieG

    1 answer

    • A:

      AnnieG,

Chlorambucil (Leukeran™) is an alkylating agent typically used for treatment of cancer. The medication works by binding to DNA strands so the DNA can not replicate thus stopping the cancer growth. Many cancerous and non-cancerous tissues can be targeted with this medication, and this drug treatment may be used for diseases where the immune system attacks the body. Lymphangiectasia is most commonly developed from a congenital malformation of the lymphatics, but can be caused by granulomas or cancer-causing lymphatic obstructions as well. Chlorambucil is an option for your pet’s intestinal lymphangiectasia depending on the severity of the disease and the potential underlying cause. Dexamethasone is used in combination with chlorambucil to further decrease the swelling and inflammation due to the underlying disease. If the pet is experiencing an infection from an outside source then the addition of an antimicrobial agent may be appropriate. For further assistance regarding your pet’s disease state or possible infection please contact your veterinarian.

Helpful alternative to steroids

Comments about Aspen Global Inc. Leukeran (chlorambucil):

Our cat Buster was looking a little skinny, so we took him for a vet visit. We're glad we did because 24 hours, and several medical tests later, left us knowing that our 5 1/2 year old cat was severely anemic and had an enlarged heart. Because of the heart condition, Buster couldn't take a steroid to increase his red blood cell count and was prescribed Luekeran instead. Over the course of the first month on this drug, the price went up and the local animal hospital stopped carrying it - and the dozen other local pharmacies we called were VERY expensive. We're so glad we found this website! It shipped overnight and was at a cheaper price than we found anywhere else. The pill itself is small, so we've had success putting it in his wet food. He eats it and we don't have the struggle of pilling him. Buster's blood levels are on the way up and we are happy the Luekeran is helping him.

Newton is alive 4 years after a lymphoma diagnosis

Comments about Aspen Global Inc. Leukeran (chlorambucil):

Newton (my cat) was diagnosed with lymphoma in his small intestines in March of 2011. With the help of Leukeran and several different steroids he has survived this cancer for four years when he was only given a life expectancy of 18 month. He has a voracious appetite, is full of energy and appears to still have a great quality of life. Leukeran is very expensive and the price has doubled since he began chemo, but it's been worth the investment. If you can find a compounding pharmacy in your area it is possible to reduce the cost of the medication by almost 50%. I used VetRx because my compounding pharmacy had a difficult time finding Leukeran.

Vet Rx's price for Leukeran is comparable to other online pharmacies. They correctly packed the medication on ice and delivered it two days after I ordered. They did a great job filling my prescription when my compounding pharmacy couldn't. I would recommend them to anyone for very professional, speedy service and providing the real medication at a competitive price.

Comments about Aspen Global Inc. Leukeran (chlorambucil):

I have been purchasing Lukeran through VetRXDirect for over a year now because the cost is much less expensive than purchasing it through my veterinarian. My 16 year old girl was given 1 to 2 years to live in July 2012; she is still with me thanks to this drug.

Life saving

Comments about Aspen Global Inc. Leukeran (chlorambucil):

My kitty has been on Leukeran for over a year. She nearly died of starvation before a diagnosis was made of intestinal lymphoma and before she was prescribed Leukeran. Since then she has been eating well and is active. This is not a cure but it has definitely prolonged her life. She also take prednisone which tastes horrible so I give her Meowables after every dose. She loves them and forgives me for the terrible stuff I put in her mouth.
