K-BroVet

If your dog suffers from epileptic seizures your veterinarian may prescribe K-BroVet.  Potassium bromide, the active ingredient in K-BroVet, is an effective anticonvulsant medication that can reduce the number of seizures your dog experiences.

  • Treats seizures due to epilepsy in dogs
  • Vitamin B12 is added to support healthy neurological function
  • Available in scored liver flavored chewables or butterscotch vanilla oral solution

Your dog’s epileptic seizures can have a big impact on his quality of life – and yours. An anticonvulsant medication like K-BroVet can help. This prescription medication contains potassium bromide, which is proven effective at controlling seizures. It decreases seizure activity at the cellular level by suppressing nerve activity and excitability that can trigger a seizure. If your veterinarian advised, this medication can be combined with other anti-seizure medications. K-BroVet contains an additional ingredient, vitamin B12, to maintain healthy brain function for your dog.  The medication is available in two, flavored, easy-dosing forms.

  • Q:

does the oral solution have to be used within a certain time? my dog only needs .38ml for her weight at this time and i wanna buy the 2 oz bottle. that would last about 5 months i think. is that ok? or will it expire before that?
Asked on 6/16/2015 by samoa15 from Connecticut, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

5 months should be fine. We currently do not have a 2oz bottle that I can look for the expiration, but the 10oz bottles we have has an expiration date of 11/2016.

  • Q:

Is this medicine as potent as having my pharmacy compound it ?
Asked on 3/5/2015 by slotdoc from New Jersey

    1 answer

    • A:

K-BroVet is a veterinary prescription medication used in the treatment of seizure disorders. K-BroVet is a commercially available product that contains the chemical, potassium bromide. Whether your veterinarian prescribes K-BroVet chews or solution, or chooses to have potassium bromide compounded, the potency(or dose) prescribed will depend on what the veterinarian recommends. As a result, the only difference between the commercially available and compounded products (medication made in pharmacy) will be the inactive ingredients used to make these dosage forms. VetRxDirect can compound several different formulations of potassium bromide, including solutions and capsules tailoring the dose and dosage form to the pet’s needs.Contact your veterinarian to determine which potassium bromide medication is most appropriate for the management of your pet’s seizure disorder.

  • Q:

My dog doesn't like the  taste of the liquid. Can it be mixed with Greek yogurt and frozen more like a treat?
Asked on 2/21/2015 by Sparky1 from Browns Valley, CA, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

The manufacturer of K-BroVet recommends storing their product at room temperature in a tightly sealed container. Refrigeration or freezing of the liquid solution can cause crystallization of the product, leading to potentially inaccurate dosing. It is therefore not recommended to freeze this product. There is an alternate dosage form of K-BroVet available, a liver flavored chewable tablet, that could be viable option for your situation. VetRxDirect also offers several compounded options of potassium bromide. Please contact your veterinarian to determine what they believe is the best course of therapy for your dog.

  • Q:

Is 250 mg of tablet potassium bromide equal to 1 ml liquid form?
Asked on 6/5/2014 by Holly from Cincinnati, OH

    1 answer

    • A:

      Holly,

The commerically available KBrovet oral solution is 250mg/mL, so one 250mg tablet would be equal in strength to 1 milliliter of the oral suspension. We also compound potassium bromide in a variety of capsule and liquid strengths, to assist in easier dosing.

  • Q:

My veterinarian wants me to increase my 15 lb dog K BroVet from 250 to 550 for 5 days because he was having seizures everyday, on top of 16.2 mg of phenobarbital to give his brain a boost, could there be a side affect on this boost?
Asked on 5/22/2014 by Lynie from California, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

      Lynie,

For seizure treatment the loading dose of K-BroVet is typically between 400 and 600 mg per day. Even though 550 mg is within the loading dose, there may be adverse effects associated the medication. The most common side effect is sedation, lasting up to 3 weeks, in dogs receiving this drug. This adverse effect is commonly seen when used with phenobarbital treatment. Other potential adverse effects reported include weight gain in the first few months of therapy, increase urine frequency, weight loss, vomiting, and constipation. You may feed a low calorie diet to avoid weight gain. Also, acute GI upset may occur if the loading dose is given too rapidly. Please contact your dog's veterinarian if one of these adverse effects is observed while on this medication.

In addition to the side effects noted above, we recommend giving doses on a regular basis. Lack of good compliance is a major cause of therapeutic failures with anti-seizure medications. If a dose is missed, give it when remembered; a dose may be doubled the next day, but should be separated by several hours to reduce the chance for an upset stomach. If your dog cannot tolerate an upset stomach (i.e. vomiting) of K-BroVet with daily doses your pet may better tolerate doses divided throughout the day and given with food.

      Thank you,
      VetRxDirect

Asked on 4/27/2014 by Jin76 from Ontario, Canada

    1 answer

    • A:

      Jin76,

K-BroVet is an anticonvulsant used in the treatment of seizures in dogs. Potassium bromide can be added to phenobarbital therapy and may help your dog based on what type of seizure the pet is having. Dosage of potassium bromide will be based on achieving a blood level of the drug that will control symptoms and minimize side effects. For guidance on usage and dosing of K-Brovet please contact your veterinarian.

Comments about PRN K-BroVet (Potassium Bromide):

My "child" Jigga is a 10 lb Rat Terrier/Chihuahua mix that has had seizures for 7 of his 8 years. He's on enough medicine to knock down a horse but you'd never know. He was previously getting regular Potassium Bromide via a local compound pharmacy. He hated it. He'd take his pills and then run as soon as the syringe came out. My new vet recently recommended K-Bro Vet for Jigga and he is no longer hesitant to take it. The price is GREAT as I was paying the same price for what would last me about a month and a half as I paid for this big bottle of a stronger dosage that requires less per use. Glad to have KBroVet in Jigga's life now! It also has extended his time between seizures and I'm VERY grateful for that.

This was the best price I could find on the Internet for the Potassium Bromide-ordered to replace the Phenobarbital our Airedale Sampson is taking. We received the prescription promptly, professional packaged, with instructions as directed by our vet. So far so good!! No seizures as we wean Sampson off of the Phenobarbital, and he is less sedated than he normally is following a dose of Phenobarbital. We're very pleased with the service we recieved.
