IV Venoset

If you have to give subcutaneous (under the skin) IV fluids to your cat due to dehydration or renal failure, your veterinarian will prescribe an IV Venoset. This equipment includes tubing and a bag to hold prescribed fluids.  The needle is not included.

  • Sterile IV tubing set for administering subcutaneous fluids to cats
  • Vented, 73 inch tube with flashback bulb
  • Macro drip - administers 15 drops/mL

Cats with chronic renal failure (CRF) or dehydration from other medical causes often need additional fluids and nutrients to restore appropriate hydration levels, help their system flush waste, and manage electrolytes. Your veterinarian may prescribe IV fluids that need to be delivered under the skin or “subcutaneously.” For subcutaneous fluid injection you will need an IV Venoset. This IV Venoset includes 73 inches of vented tubing and a bag to hold the prescribed fluid. A needle at the end of the tubing is inserted into your cat’s skin usually between the neck and shoulder blades.  Note that the needle is not included with this kit. Consult with your veterinarian about how to administer IV fluids to manage your cat’s condition and which needle you need to use.

What you should know about IV Venoset:

  • Talk to your veterinarian before using this product.
  • Follow dosing directions exactly - don’t give your pet more medication than directed and don’t skip doses.
  • Read the label carefully for information about storage, possible side effects, and drug interactions.

  • Q:

Can this be reused or do you need a new one for each bag of fluid?
Asked on 9/24/2014 by Fujimom from Detroit, MI, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

In general, a venoset is a disposable, sterile, gravity IV set used for subcutaneous (sub-Q) administration, or intravenous (IV) administration, of fluids or medications to pets. Replacing these sets frequently can be costly, however, Venoset tubing is subject to bacterial growth the longer it is in use. For this reason, strict attention should be provided to the tubing for any signs of cloudiness, film formation, or particulates which may suggest an infected line. Infected lines could lead to infections in your pet that could be life threatening, so also monitor for injection site tenderness or redness. Please contact your pet’s veterinarian to help in the determination of an infected line, the need for additional IV fluids, or the need for a new line each time a new bag is used. The recommendation often varies based upon the pet’s environment, the medication/fluid used, cost and frequency of administration. Your pet’s veterinarian will help you make the best decision.

      Thank you,

drips as quickly as the one i got from my vet

Comments about Abbott Animal Health IV Venoset:

when i started looking online for these i only found the one from fosters & smith. that one just dripped too slowly for my 2 antsy 16 year old cats with kidney disease that don't really want to be held, stuck with a needle, & have fluids dripped into them. i decided to give these a try when i saw them & i like them much better than the ones from the other catalog. these are more like the ones i got from my vet. the shutoff seems to be positioned lower & easier to reach than on the others i used. the drip time seems a lot shorter & we're usually done before the cats start struggling too much to pull away. the quicker the process the better for all concerned.

Comments about Abbott Animal Health IV Venoset:

I've been using regular administration kits and this one has a lot of bells and whistles that others do not. It has an extra port and bulb action built in. I am just giving subQ fluids. I wonder how much more this product would do in more critical situations. Hope I don't have to find out!

Comments about Abbott Animal Health IV Venoset:

As I stated it's a big savings over buying from the veterinarian. I like the length. Most of the time they are too long and attract the other cats into playing while I'm trying to give my little sick one her fluids. I wish it had a port to inject other medications into.

Comments about Abbott Animal Health IV Venoset:

I was disappointed I that the venoset did not have a screw-on attachment for the needle to help retain the needle to the hose when my cat squirms. I also would have appreciated a slide shutoff valve instead of the roller cutoff.

Comments about Abbott Animal Health IV Venoset:

If only I could have used this sooner! I found this venoset just as good or even better than the one at the vet's office. The best part is the the rubber part that made it easier and more comfy for my fingers/hand. Removing the used needle was easier, as well. Great product. I was so worried it wouldn't be compatible to the Lactaid Ringers and the needle, but customer service helped me and gave me confidence!

Comments about Abbott Animal Health IV Venoset:

I really like the sturdiness of tube of this product. I feels a bit stronger than a similar product from a different maker. Also, I prefer the 73" tube to the longer one of the other brand.
