Instructions for use of the GingerLead Dog Support Sling and Rehabilitation Harness:

  • Pass sling under your dog's belly holding the straps on each side of your dog.  The handle should always be on the left side of your pet.
  • Hold the handle with the attached leash on top.  The corduroy lining should be facing down.  Bring the free strap under the handle and align it beneath the strip of hook and loop.
  • Wrap the handle under and around the loose strap and close the hook and loop ends of the handle together so the loose strap is inside the handle and the leash is on top.
  • Attach the leash to your dog's collar with the snap hook and you are ready to go.

The width of the padded sling is the primary difference between the large and small GingerLead

  • FEMALE   The width of the LARGE female GingerLead is 7.5 inches, measured from your dog's back legs forward along her abdomen.  If the large is too wide for your dog, and your dog's abdomen exceeds 4 inches, order the SMALL harness.  The sling with straps adjusts up to 60 inches in length for giant breed dogs (around a large body) or shorter dogs (pad lower to the ground).
  • MALE   The width of the LARGE male GingerLead is 5.5 inches in the center of the cutout, measured from your dog's genitals forward along his abdomen.   If the large is too wide for your dog, and your dog's abdomen exceeds 3.5 inches, order the SMALL harness.  The sling with straps adjusts up to 60 inches in length for giant breed dogs (around a large body) or shorter dogs (pad lower to the ground).
  • The new Tall size is for tall, lean dogs like Great Danes or Greyhounds. The maximum length of the Tall size is 37 inches, which allows the handle to be closer to a tall dog’s back.

  • Q:

I have a male black lab who weighs 130lbs, is there one big enough to fit my big boy?
Asked on 4/2/2015 by ginp from Hanover, IN, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

It depends on the stature of your pet. If he is more than tall, you would want a large male, but if he is taller, then you would want a tall male. The only difference in the two is that the taller one has a shorter handle. If you're not sure which to get, you may want to contact the manufacturer. They would be able to answer more specific questions.

  • Q:

I have a male Yorkie Poo with a girth of 16' and he's 13 lbs....do I go for the mini or the small lift harness?
Asked on 2/28/2015 by dedaw from Leesburg, VA, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

A 13 lb. male Yorkie Poo would typically fit best in the Mini size. However, if he has a long body you may want to measure him to make sure. The main difference between the Mini and Small is the width and construction of the support pad that goes under his tummy, in front of his back legs. The pad on the Mini is a neoprene tube and it is about 1.5 inches wide. You can roll a wash cloth so it is about 1.5 inches wide and sling it under his tummy to see if the Mini would be a good fit. If that seems too narrow for him, you can fold the cloth to 3.5 inches wide (the width of our Small) and sling it under him to see if it is more comfortable. The support pad on the Small is made of corduroy, foam padding and nylon so it is usually a bit bulky for a 13 lb dog, but there are exceptions if he needs a broader base of support.

  • Q:

we have a house with several 2 steps between rooms, is this product made for a dog to wear all day? does the product provide support or is it the handler? (yellow lab, 80 pounds age 13-size medium male?)
Asked on 2/4/2015 by goldie from VA, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

GingerLead is not a wearable garment. It is only to be used when your dog is moving or eliminating, or when a dog needs help standing. The harness is intended to help a dog with weak hind legs and its handler move together, and makes it easier on both.

How do I know whether my male dog is tall
Asked on 8/23/2014 by mandog from rvc

    1 answer

    • A:

The tall gingerlead is made for dogs with long legs or for shorter people holding the handle. The only difference between the large and tall gingerlead is the length of the handle.

I have a 20 lb male dog, interested in Gingerlead. How do you measure for the correct size? Am not seeing directions in the ad
Asked on 8/14/2014 by Paris4me from Portland, OR, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

If you look at the Gingerlead page, there is a tab that says package insert. Click on that and it will tell you that the width is the main difference between the small and large Gingerlead. You should be able to use those measurements to decide which side would work best for your dog.

is this something that is constantly put on and off or may it stay on?
Asked on 7/23/2014 by bcouch30 from Florida

    1 answer

    • A:

The gingerlead is meant to help support your dog while walking, so you have to put it on and off whenever you walk with your dog. It won't help support your dog if worn without you holding the handle so it should only be worn while you walk with your pet.

  • Q:

is this adjustable? we have a Siberian Husky, 90 lbs 3 ft tall,,debating what is the best harness for us to get,,,large or tall?
Asked on 3/3/2014 by rene from florida

    1 answer

    • A:

      rene,

The main difference between a large and tall GingerLead is the length of the straps between the support pad and handle. To determine whether a large or tall will fit your Siberian Husky best, you can measure from your hand where you want to hold the handle (I hold it with my arm bent like I'm carrying a heavy bag of groceries), down under his belly in front of his penis and back up the other side to your hand to complete the loop. You are simulating our handle, straps and pad (don't close the loop over his back, it should extend up to your hand). If that measurement is 37 inches of less, the tall is the size that will fit best. If it is more than 37 inches, the large will fit best. The tall and large are both adjustable, but the maximum length of the pad, straps and handle for the tall is 37 inches and the minimum length for the large is 38 inches.

      Thank you,

  • Q:

Which harness/sling would you recommend for a Bouvier des Flandres at 105 pounds Male…not sure if just the large male or the tall male is better??
Asked on 2/14/2014 by Jeremiah from Albuquerque, NM, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

      Jeremiah,

The manufacturer recommends the following to assist with figuring out the appropriate size:
Measure starting where the handle of the GingerLead will rest in your hand (while you are standing upright), continue under your dog’s belly, up the other side, then back to your hand completing the loop. If it measures 37” or less, the Tall size should be considered.
If you're still unsure which would fit your dog best, the makers of the GingerLead are happy to answer any sizing questions and they can be reached at: (303) 482-2074.

  • Q:

Online information indicates that the width of the large (female) GingerLead is 7.5 inches. Please provide the width of the small size (female). Any idea which of the two is typically used for Pembroke Welsh Corgis?
    Asked on 10/2/2013 by Susan

    1 answer

    • A:

      Susan,

The Small, Female support pad is 4 inches wide.  Since Pembroke Welsh Corgis tend to have a long body, owners often select a wider sling (bigger size) than would be typical for their weight.  You can fold a bath towel to the different widths and sling it under her tummy in front of her back legs to see which width (7.5 inches or 4 inches) would be most comfortable for her.  You may also want to consider the Large, Male GingerLead if she is in between the Large and Small Female because it is 5.5 inches wide under her tummy.

      Thank you,

I've been using this for the passed 4 weeks to help my 2 yr old pup get around after knee surgery. The sling supports her no problem and enables her to go up steps while I hold her back legs in the air (haven't tried down - she gets carried). However, it's the ability to attached the sling to the collar that makes this product so great. This feature keeps her from slipping out of the sling. Especially when she so over enthusiastically sniffs the grass or tries convincing me to take her for a walk by pulling down the sidewalk. (Hard to keep a young dog inactive for 4 weeks and more.)

Only hard part about ordering this product is getting the sizing right. My pup is a 65-70 lb sheppard-cattle dog-lab mix, so she has a barrel chest (more so than I thought) and a little waist. The large is a little too wide for her, causing it to bunch at the front where her ribs are. I highly suggest measuring your dog before ordering.

Tip: I found using her collar, instead of her harness, with the sling makes it easier to control her movement and direct her.

I watched the video before ordering, but didn't think about how different it would work for a male dog. Yes, I ordered the right one, but I would never use this on a walk with him, as it either covers him, or slips back and pushes him wrong. I suppose that's okay, as we really bought it for going up and down the 7 stairs to get outside. I'm trying to "practice" with him on level ground when he's fairly fresh in the day, and he's not adapting well at all. We really need this as his hind legs continue to degenerate. Maybe when he's less able to try on his own, he'll be more willing to let us use this Ginger Lead.

Bought this to help my senior boxer with mobility issues. It works very well; one change I would make would be to velcro it to itself so it wouldn't fall off the abdomen when you let go of the handles.

I purchased this sling about a month ago previous to my Westie's double rear knee surgery. She is 16 1/2 years of age, and this sling has really helped her. It is padded for comfort and does not slip. Very comfortable. I sampled others before her surgery and they did not come close to this one. In fact they were awkward and slipped around. I totally recommend this one.

I tried using the Ginger Lead with Claudia but found that it didn't fit snugly (as in your picture) but slipped to the side of our 90 pound German Shepherd. She seemed uncomfortable and refused to do her business when the lead was on her. The failure of her back legs wasn't much ameliorated. Since then, her condition declined and we had to have her put down. I am not sure that there is anything useful I can do now with the lead

I bought the Gingerlead a few weeks ago and it has not been as helpful as I had inticipated. It doesn't stay on very well and the handle is way to tall for me- not very adjustable either. I am bummed as I thought this would help my old dog with walking and staying active- Over priced for what you get.
