Gentizol Ointment for Dogs

Canine ear infections associated with a yeast infection require special treatment. If your dog has this kind of ear infection, your veterinarian may prescribe Gentizol Ointment because it combines an antibiotic, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory into one convenient topical medication.

  • Treats canine ear infections due to yeast
  • Three treatments in one—antibiotic, antifungal, anti-inflammatory
  • Soothing ointment is easy to apply

Chronic or acute ear infections, also called “otitis externa,” can be caused by a certain type of yeast called Malassezia pachydermatis. Yeast can grow quickly in the ear’s warm, moist environment causing pain, itching, irritation, and swelling and making your dog very uncomfortable. Gentizol Ointment is specifically formulated to treat ear infections due to yeast. This prescription medication combines three active ingredients, including gentamicin, betamethasone, and clotrimazole, to fight bacteria and fungi, and reduce swelling. The powerful trio works quickly and the topical ointment formulation is soothing on your dog’s ear.

Gentizol is approved to treat ear infections in dogs, but your pet’s veterinarian may prescribe this medication for off-label use in cats. Please follow up with your cat’s veterinarian if the yeast infection doesn’t improve after a few days of therapy or is still present after the course of therapy.

both containers say ointment--what is a dropper bottle?
Asked on 2/26/2015 by babs1 from New York, NY, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

Gentizol is a veterinary prescribed topical ointment used in the treatment of certain types of canine ear infections. Gentizol contains an antifungal, antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory and is available in two different ointment formulations. As such, one formulation is thicker and is packaged in an ointment tube, while the other is is thinner and is packaged in a bottle. Both formulations have an included administration tip to facilitate the administration of the medication. The veterinarian may prefer a certain type of formulation thickness depending on the preference and/or the severity of infection being treated. It is recommended to contact your veterinarian with any administration and dosing questions.

  • Q:

Can this product cause deafness in older dogs. If so, would that deafness be permanent. If temporary, how long for return of hearing?
Asked on 9/14/2014 by JuneBug1 from Wellsboro, PA, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

Gentizol is a combination of three medications: gentamicin (an antibiotic), betamethasone (an anti-inflammatory), and clotrimazole (an antifungal). While rare, Gentizol ointment has been associated with partial hearing-loss and deafness in a small number of dogs, particularly in older dogs. The hearing-loss is usually temporary and resolves with discontinuation of the medication, but can potentially cause irreversible damage. It would be important to contact your pet’s veterinarian in order to determine the best course of action if you feel your pet is experiencing this side effect.

  • Q:

I've been using Gentizol in my dog's ear for about a week now and while he's not as itchy, his ear still stinks (not like the meds or ear wash I was given) and the hair around his ear is very oily and his ear is never dry. Normal?
Asked on 7/1/2014 by klwehlann from Salem, IN, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

Gentizol is an ointment so it can be very oily and make the hair around the ear seem wet. Before every dose of the product, the ear should be cleaned and dried. Any excessive hair should be trimmed from the ear (your veterinary technician can show you how to properly do this). After instilling the prescribed amount into the affected ear, massage the medication into the ear to ensure the medication is absorbed. If these steps are being followed therapy should be complete after around 7 days. You should still follow up with your veterinarian to ensure that the infection is cleared and that the smell you are experiencing is not something of further concern.

    • A:

Gentizol is indicated for the use in dogs by the manufacturer but your pet’s veterinarian may prescribe this medication for off-label use in cats. Please follow up with your cat’s veterinarian if the yeast infection doesn’t improve or is still present after the course of therapy.
