What is Cyproheptadine?

Cyproheptadine is a prescription antihistamine medication for pets used for various disorders. It is commonly used to stimulate cats to eat and as an anti-itching or allergy medicine in dogs and cats. It can also be used for other disorders, as recommended by a veterinarian.

What else should you know about Cyproheptadine?

Cyproheptadine can cause drowsiness or hyperactivity, depending on your particular pet. The other main side effects include urinary retention, dry mouth, and dry eyes. It should be used cautiously in pets with bladder neck obstruction, severe cardiac failure, glaucoma, or pyloroduodenal obstruction. Cyproheptadine interacts with other medications so be sure to inform your pet's veterinarian and a VetRxDirect Pharmacist of all the over-the-counter and prescription medications your pet is taking.

  • Q:

Is this .24 for 100 tablets or .24 for one tablet?
    Asked on 2/19/2014 by brcy

    1 answer

    • A:

Cyproheptadine, as with many of the tablets that we dispense, is sold per tablet. As dosages and duration of therapy can vary widely, this permits pet owners to purchase the exactly number of tablets their pet's veterinarians have prescribed.

      Katrina,

The brand name Periactin tablet, approved for human use, is no longer available.  Less expensive generic versions of this product are now available in the marketplace.  Cyproheptadine was the active ingredient in the Periactin tablet.  Cyproheptadine is used as an antihistamine and to treat itching in dogs and cats.  It is also used as an appetite stimulant in cats.  Possible side effects include sedation, lethargy and possible mucus membrane dryness.  Contact your veterinarian if the sedation/lethargy becomes severe.

      Thank you,

  • Q:

Can this medication be given to our cat long term, say for many months?
    Asked on 10/4/2013 by Tom

    1 answer

    • A:

      Tom,

Cyproheptadine may be useful as an appetite stimulant in animals.  Cyproheptadine is utilized less commonly for other indications such as the treatment of feline asthma, itching, allergies, inappropriate urination and sometimes as an adjunctive therapy for Cushing's syndrome or in animals with serotonin syndrome.  Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine and may cause sedation and lethargy and drying effects and increased thirst.  Long term of use of cyproheptadine is not uncommon however occasional lab work and routine follow-up by your veterinarian may be required.

      Thank you,

      Linda,

It is unknown exactly how long it takes.  Each cat will respond differently to the medication.  Please discuss further with your veterinarian.

Prescribed as appetite stimulant...

Comments about Breckenridge Pharmaceutical Inc Cyproheptadine:

...although, I understand it has other uses. Twenty-year-old cat has reduced appetite as a result of advanced age (but he's still in pretty good shape!). Was ravenous for the first three weeks on this pill, and gained about two much-needed pounds in six -eight weeks. Appetite is not as robust as before, despite remaining on rx, but is eating a reasonable amount and maintaining the weight gain.

Comments about Breckenridge Pharmaceutical Inc Cyproheptadine:

I bought the cypro for my sick cat and it was cheaper here than through my vet, BUT the bummer is they don't put an expiration on it. I had to call and have them look at the bottle they had so I knew for sure it was safe. Explanation is that they go thru it so fast, but still I think pet owners would like to know that the meds. they're giving are safe for their pet to take.
