Cyclosporine (modified) Capsules and Liquid for Pets

Prescription Cyclosporine (modified) treats a range of diseases and disorders including allergic reactions related to an overactive immune system.  Your pet's veterinarian may prescribe this medication for your dog’s atopic dermatitis or anal fistulas. Cyclosporine (modified) is often indicated for feline asthma.

  • Treats atopic dermatitis and anal fistulas in dogs
  • Prescribed for asthma in cats
  • Effective, affordable alternative to steroids
  • Available in capsules and liquid

Cyclosporine (modified) is the generic form of Atopica, which is an immunosuppressive agent that targets the immune system cells, which trigger allergic reactions. This medication is especially effective at treating non-contagious skin diseases in dogs including atopic dermatitis that causes itching, infection, hair loss, and more. Veterinarians also prescribe this medication to treat feline asthma. Cyclosporine (modified), which comes in liquid or capsule form, is a safe effective alternative to steroids and it generally costs less as well.

  • Q:

What does * (modified) * mean with regard to this product? Are the ingredients and amounts the same as Atopica?
Asked on 5/8/2014 by Lesleigh from El Dorado Hills, CA

    1 answer

    • A:

      Lesleigh,

Cyclosporine (modified) contains the same active ingredient as Atopica. The term “modified” is referring to a reformulation of the original cyclosporine product. The modified product has better absorption of the medication. In order to optimize drug absorption the medication should be taken on an empty stomach.

  • Q:

can cyclosporine be bought over the counter? like at pet smart
Asked on 3/17/2014 by sissy from bakersfield ca

    1 answer

    • A:

      Sissy,

Cyclosporine is a prescription medication, and is not available over the counter. We can accept prescriptions in a couple of different ways: once an order is placed, we can send a fax over to your pet's veterinarian which they can fax back, or give us a call to approve, or the veterinarian may choose to issue you a written prescription when you can then mail in to us.

  • Q:

I have an 8 year old Cavalier that has been itching for 1 1/2 years. He did very well on Prednisone (5 mg) but I feel guilty leaving him on that although I am after his quality of life, at this point. This drug is so expensive…is it safer than Prednisone?
Asked on 2/6/2014 by joycheril from Chino Hills, CA, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

Cyclosporine is an immunosuppressant that may have similar efficacy as a corticosteroid (i.e. prednisone) but has a different adverse effect profile associated with its use. Common adverse effects seen with cyclosporine are vomiting, anorexia (loss of appetite), and diarrhea; with other more severe, but less common, side effects, reported. Both medications require follow-up and regular monitoring by your veterinarian. We recommend contacting your veterinarian to have this discussion regarding the risks versus benefits for each of the treatments to determine the medication that is right for your pet.

was given this for my dog. she has a growth growing up her eyelid. It went away when I used it but now its back again. Do you think I should use these drops again?
    Asked on 12/11/2013 by Jean

    1 answer

    • A:

      Jean,

You would need to verify the beyond use date or expiration date on the bottle to confirm the drops are still in date and could be used. It would be best to contact your veterinarian to discuss the returning symptoms before using the drops again.

  • Q:

My dog refuses to take the capsule by mouth. Last night, I finally resorted to opening the capsule and mixing it with a very small amount of flaked chicken. She did eat it. Is there any way I can get her to take the capsule?
    Asked on 10/30/2013 by Kathleen

    2 answers

    • A:

The liquid form is very bad tasting stuff, so that would be my last resort. I think the pill pockets are a good idea, but if the caps you have been trying are manufactured by TEVA, I know that the ones I had from that manufacturer smell awful -- and didn't really clear up my cat's skin. I never used the second TEVA box I had purchased, because when I reordered from VetRxDirect, they sent me the Watson brand, and they were so much better.
My Vet had warned me that some of the generics aren't as effective as Atopica, but I tried them anyway. Now if VetRxDirect will keep sending me the Watson brand, I'll be happy, and my kitty's skin will be comfortable.

If the caps smell bad, that might be the problem for your dog. The ones I ordered that came from Watson don't have any smell I can discern, and my cat's skin allergy has improved a lot since I switched to the Watson product.

    • A:

      Kathleen,

Pill pockets and pill wrap may be an option to hide the capsule.  Cyclosporine (modified) is also available as an oral solution and may be an option if capsule administration becomes too difficult.  The cyclosporine (modified) oral solution is available in a 50ml bottle and a 100mg/ml concentration.

      Thank you,

  • Q:

In what country is your generic cyclosporine, 50 mg produced?
    Asked on 10/9/2013 by Howard

    1 answer

    • A:

      Howard,

Because it is a generic, we carry several different manufacturers for the cyclosporine.  Right now, our 50mg is produced by a company called Teva, and per the labeling on the box, it was produced in the Czech Republic by Teva Czech Industries.  Some of our other strengths are currently from a company called Watson, and the labeling on those packages says that it was manufactured by Banner Pharmacaps (Canada) Ltd, Olds, Alberta Canada.

Hard to find liquid

Comments about Watson Cyclosporine (modified):

After struggling to dose my Bichon twice a day with large Cyclosporine pills, it's a blessing to be able to administer this liquid. It can be mixed with food or squirted down her throat (it tastes bad but it's still better than fighting through the pill process.) If you have a dog that can't take the large size pills (gelcaps and therefore you can't break into smaller pieces), this is a real find.

Two different manufacturers, so get Watson brand.

Comments about Watson Cyclosporine (modified):

When I initially ordered generic cycloSPORINE 25mg, I was sent TEVA brand; it stunk, and was not controlling my cat's skin problem at all. I was having to use it daily instead of tapering to the half dose of Atopica he had been able to get by with.

At the rate I was using it, I thought I would run out quickly so I reordered, and this time was sent Watson brand.

This has been a pleasant surprise -- the caps don't smell bad, and his skin has cleared up, so I'll be requesting that they will only send me the Watson product.

I don't know why veterinarians don't prescribe the 25mg capsules for cats; the liquid Atopica is awful tasting. I'd hate to have it squirted in my mouth! I tried to disguise it in homemade treats, and still had to make him eat them. That makes it hard to keep treating, so I bet most people just give up.
