Ciprofloxacin Ophthalmic for Pets

Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that effectively treats a host of bacterial infections. This formulation puts the power of Ciprofloxacin in eye drop form for treating eye infections in dogs and cats.

  • Kills bacteria in the eye including conjunctivitis
  • Safe for dogs and cats
  • Dropper top for easier dosing

Veterinarians prescribe Ciprofloxacin Ophthalmic eye drops to treat bacterial infections of the eye and eyelid including conjunctivitis.  Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. This broad-spectrum medication is safe and effectively kills a range of bacteria that can damage the eye.  The medication works by stopping the bacteria from making DNA, which kills the bacteria and stops the infection. Ciprofloxacin Ophthalmic must be given for several days in a row as prescribed by your pet's veterinarian to be effective. This is not a preventive medicine. The bottle comes with a dropper top to make it easier to administer the drops into your pet’s eyes.

What you should know about Ciprofloxacin Ophthalmic:

  • Talk to your pet's veterinarian before using this product.
  • Follow dosing directions exactly - don’t give your pet more medication than directed and don’t skip doses.
  • Read the label carefully for information about storage, possible side effects, and drug interactions.

For additional information about Ciprofloxacin Ophthalmic click the “More Information” and “Package Insert” tabs above.

Resistance is a major concern when giving antibiotics. Resistance occurs when bacteria survive and mutate and are then able to survive even after antibiotics are given. To help avoid any resistance, it is important to give antibiotics as they are prescribed for as long as they are prescribed even if your pet is looking and feeling better.

  • Q:

MY DOG IS PREGNANT AND GOT HER EYE SCRATCHED BY THE CAT, I WANT TO KNOW IF OPHTHALMIC CIPRO CAN BE USED?
Asked on 7/4/2014 by LIZA from Riverside, CA, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

      Liza,

Ciprofloxacin ophthalmic product is Category C for pregnancy. What this means is that it has been studied in rats and mice at doses up to six times the usual daily human oral dose and has revealed no evidence of impaired fertility or harm to the fetus. With that said, the manufacturer recommends the product only be used if the benefits outweigh the risk. For this information we would have you contact your veterinarian for an appointment.

My dogs eye was scratched. Scratch is visible, roundish. Vet prescrip: Clavomax 1 wk, Previcox 1 wk, Ciprofloxacin ophthalmic solution ongoing (day 16). How can/will antibiotics heal a corneal scratch?
Asked on 2/28/2014 by cheecharoni from La Quinta, CA, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

Speak to your veterinarian on this question. There are products promoted to help repair corneal injuries but your veterinarian would need to determine if they would be appropriate for your pet.

can I use ciprofloxacin ophthalmic solution prescribed in humans for my Dog
Asked on 1/19/2014 by linkla from York, ME, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

Ciprofloxacin is a prescription medication, and as such, should never be used for your pet without a prescription from a veterinarian. Your dog's veterinarian would be able to best say if ciprofloxacin would be the appropriate course of treatment for your dog, if treatment is required, or if another medication would be appropriate.

My cat has a nasal pseudomona infection and we use these drops as a nose drop. They have helped a great deal. Vet Rx Direct is the best vet online pharmacy I've found.

We saw almost immediate improvement in our Beagle puppy's eyes after the first use. Within an hour, his eye was wide open and looked much better. Great for use with many types of eye infections. We were so happy to see the immediate result and relief for our pup.
