Amitriptyline (Generic) Tablets for Dogs and Cats

Amitriptyline is a medication used treat behavioral problems such as anxiety in cats and dogs and excessive grooming or spraying in cats. Amitriptyline can also be used to treat neuropathic pain, or pain caused by nerves.

Amitriptyline can lower the seizure threshold, so let your veterinarian know about any history of seizures or if any seizures occur while your pet is taking amitriptyline. The most common adverse effects seen with amitriptyline in dogs include sedation, constipation, and urinary retention. Diarrhea and vomiting can also occur. Cats may exhibit sedation, excess salivation, anorexia, vomiting, and disorientation. Notify your veterinarian if any side effects are severe.

Too much amitriptyline can be toxic and life-threatening. In an overdose situation, contact animal poison control for further information. Keep the medication in a safe place where pets and children cannot get into the medication. If you miss giving your pet the dose, give it to him as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal schedule.

There are several medication that can interact with amitriptyline. Below is a list of a few medications that may interact. The list is not all-inclusive, so talk to your veterinarian regarding any medications or supplements you may be giving your pet.

  • Cimetidine
  • Cisapride
  • Diazepam
  • Fluoxetine

It is important to give your pet this medication exactly as prescribed and to not discontinue the drug without consulting with your veterinarian. It may take several weeks to see if amitriptyline is effective for your pet. Continue dosing as prescribed unless otherwise instructed by your veterinarian.
