
Why has my veterinarian prescribed Aminophylline Tablets?
Aminophylline is prescribed to relieve coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and troubled breathing. This medicine relaxes air passages of the lungs, which increases the amount of air that flows into the lungs.
How do I give Aminophylline Tablets?
First, READ THE LABEL CAREFULLY.
Give Aminophylline to your pet as directed by your veterinarian.
Give this medication half an hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.
Make sure your pet has water to drink.
If Aminophylline is prescribed as a liquid, measure the dose carefully.
Try to give this medication at about the same time each day.
DO NOT give your pet more medicine than directed.
DO NOT give your pet medicine more often than prescribed.
Try not to miss giving any doses.
If I miss a dose, what do I do?
If you miss a dose, give it to your pet as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose, then continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not give your pet two doses at once.
How do I store Aminophylline Tablets?
Keep this medicine out of reach of children.
Store this medicine at room temperature in a dry, cool place. Keep this medicine away from heat and direct sunlight.
Do not store this medicine in damp places, in the bathroom, or near the kitchen sink. This medication can break down when exposed to moisture or heat.
What are the potential side effects Aminophylline Tablets?
Your pet may have a faster heartbeat and stomach upset, but these effects should disappear after a while. If these symptoms continue, contact your veterinarian.
Other symptoms may include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, excessive ingestion of food, and increased frequency of urination. Contact your veterinarian if these side effects are troublesome or continue.
Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.
What about possible drug interactions?
Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any other medications you are giving to your pet.
It’s not uncommon for your veterinarian to prescribe two different medications, which may cause a drug interaction to occur. If this happens, your veterinarian may change the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely.
Aminophylline and Theophylline may interact with the following drugs: phenobarbital, phenytoin, cimetidine, erythromycin, allopurinol, thiabendazole, clindamycin, lincomycin, beta-adrenergic blocking agents (e.g. propranolol, atenolol, metoprolol, nadolol, timolol), aluminum, and magnesium antacid preparations.
Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.
This drug relaxes the smooth muscles in the airway allowing your pet to breathe easier. Aminophylline is available as tablets, extended release tablets, liquid and as an injectable.
What is this drug?Read and follow the prescription label carefully.
Give the exact amount prescribed and only as often as directed. This medication is often given on an empty stomach.
Give this medication for as long as your veterinarian directs. Do not skip doses or stop giving the medication without consulting your veterinarian.
Ensure that your pet has plenty of fresh water available at all times.
To prevent dosing with a large amount of medication, avoid allowing your pet to chew or break the extended release forms of this medication.
Baseline blood work is recommended to assess your pet's general health before starting this drug.
Periodic blood work to monitor its effect on the body is also advised if long-term therapy is necessary. Dose adjustments may be made based upon these results and an assessment of how your dog or cat is responding clinically.

Ideally, give medication at the same time(s) daily to keep constant levels in the blood.

COMMON USES:
This medicine is a bronchodilator used to treat the symptoms of asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your veterinarian.
BEFORE USING THIS MEDICINE:
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR VETERIARNIAN OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are giving your pet. DO NOT GIVE THIS MEDICINE if you are also giving certain medicine for high blood pressure or heart conditions (nonselective beta blockers). ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR PET’S DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are giving barbiturates, cimetidine, erythromycin, fluvoxamine, lithium, mexiletine, rifampin, quinolone antibiotics, tacrine, thiabendazole, ticlopidine, troleandomycin, verapamil, zileuton, or medicine for seizures. Inform your veterinarian of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Contact your veterinarian or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about giving this medicine.
HOW TO GIVE THIS MEDICINE:
Follow the directions for giving this medicine provided by your veterinarian. THIS MEDICINE MAY BE GIVEN on an empty stomach or with food. TRY TO GIVE THIS MEDICINE every day at evenly spaced times. If you have questions about the best time to give it, ask your pharmacist. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature, away from heat and light. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, give it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your pet’s next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your pet’s regular dosing schedule. Do not give 2 doses at once.
CAUTIONS:
DO NOT GIVE THIS MEDICINE if your pet has had an allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any ingredient in this product. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE or give this medicine for longer than prescribed without checking with your veterinarian. KEEP ALL VETERINARY AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are using this medicine. BEFORE YOUR PET HAS ANY VETERINARY OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the veterinarian that you are giving this medicine. Before switching brands of this medicine, consult your veterinarian or pharmacist. BEFORE YOU BEGIN GIVING ANY NEW MEDICINE either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your veterinarian or pharmacist. This includes any medicines contain phenylpropanolamine, pseudoephedrine, ephedrine, epinephrine, or phenylephrine.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS:
SIDE EFFECTS that may go away during treatment include nervousness, restlessness, or nausea. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your veterinarian. CHECK WITH YOUR VETERINARIAN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if your pet experiences diarrhea, black or tarry stools, difficulty sleeping, confusion, change in behavior, muscle twitching, seizures, or fast breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your veterinarian or pharmacist.
OVERDOSE:
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency veterinary service immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include fast or irregular heartbeat, nausea or vomiting, unusual nervousness or restlessness, agitation, irritability, and seizures.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
If your pet’s breathing symptoms do not improve or if they become worse, contact your veterinarian. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with other pets for which it was not prescribed. DO NOT GIVE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children. IF GIVING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
