• Are they an over the counter drug that I can buy that will help with pain and swelling in my Bulldog similar to caroprfen?

  • Some traditional over-the-counter pain medications such as Tylenol may be used in dogs, but only under the direction and guidance of a veterinarian. It is not recommended to give any over-the-counter medications to your dog without first consulting with your veterinarian as they have the most updated health history of your dog and will be able to better recommend a dose.

  • Tramadol is an opioid, narcotic-like pain reliever that is used in the management of moderate to severe pain; such as post-surgical pain and severe arthritis. Tramadol is a human-labeled drug that is classified as a controlled substance due to it's potential for abuse. Rimadyl contains carprofen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), commonly used in the treatment of osteoarthritis and postoperative pain in dogs. Carprofen differs from tramadol because it is a non-narcotic medication that treats pain by reducing inflammation. VetRxDirect does not dispense tramadol but you should be able to get a tramadol prescription dispensed at your local pharmacy. Please consult with your veterinarian to determine the appropriate pain-relieving medication for your pet.

  • Mich, The most common side effects reported with Rimadyl in dogs are vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased appetite. Very rarely, Rimadyl can cause stomach ulcers and problems with liver function. Your veterinarian may wish to perform liver tests if your pet is on the medication longer than a few weeks. • Do I need a prescription from the Vet to order these.?

  • Yes, carprofen, the active ingredient in Rimadyl, does require a prescription from a licensed United States veterinarian. Once an order is placed, we can send a fax to your veterinary clinic requesting approval for the prescription which the clinic can fax back, or your pet's veterinarian may choose to issue you a written prescription, which you can then mail to us. • I have heard of a generic carprofen chewable called Carodyl. Do you know anything about this or have any plans to carry it??
