Pro-Pectalin Antidiarrheal Gel and Tablets for Dogs and Cats

What is Pro-Pectalin?

Pro-Pectalin is a product that blends pectin, kaolin, and enterococcus faecium together into one easy to dose gel or tablet. Kaolin is a natural aluminum silicate, pectin is a carbohydrate derived from citrus fruits and apples, and enterococcus faecium is a bacteria. The blend of these three ingredients can help with the symptoms of diarrhea by protecting the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, adsorbing fluids in the GI tract, and by providing healthy bacterial flora to the GI tract.

What is important to know about Pro-Pectalin?

Pro-Pectalin shouldn’t be relied on to control severe diarrhea, and should not replace the fluid and electrolyte monitoring of a veterinarian. Pro-Pectalin may also cause some slight constipation if used at high doses for long periods of time. It is important to follow instructions from your pet's veterinarian on how to use this product. This product may also affect the absorption of some medications, so it would be best to contact your pharmacist at VetRxDirect to make sure it won’t affect your pet’s other medications. If your pet develops a lack of energy, a high fever, or if their diarrhea does not improve, contact your pet's veterinarian as soon as possible.

  • Q:

Does this medication stop the diarrhea?
    Asked on 8/30/2014 by glory

    1 answer

    • A:

Pro-Pectalin is a combination product that includes kaolin, which is a type of clay used to prevent diarrhea, pectin, a type of fiber found in fruits and vegetables, and Enterococcus faecium, which works as “good” bacteria in the gut in hopes to restore natural gut bacteria and decrease “bad” diarrhea-causing bacteria. Pro-Pectalin is intended to be used for mild diarrhea caused by diet, stress, or antibiotics. It is not intended for severe or life-threatening diarrhea. It would be important to discuss any diarrhea your pet is experiencing with a veterinarian in order to determine the cause before selecting a treatment.

  • Q:

Is it possible for a dog to OD from pro-pectalin?
Asked on 4/28/2014 by selfumi from Georgia, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

Pro-Pectalin contains pectin, Enterococcus faecium, and kaolin. These are considered safe active ingredients for use in pets when used as directed. If an overdose were to occur, the most likely issue to arise would be constipation. With all medications, overdose is possible and it is best to follow the directions provided by the manufacturer or from your dog's veterinarian.

  • Q:

Is it okay to give a dog pro-pectalin gel without a prescription?  If so, why do vets prescribe it?
Asked on 4/16/2014 by TylerJones from Dallas, TX, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

      Tyler,

Pro-Pectalin is a veterinarian-line medication that is available over-the-counter without a prescription. This medication has instructions for usage and dosage on the container. Veterinarians may prescribe this product if they want to clarify or alter how the medication should be given. We recommend that you consult with your dog’s veterinarian before the addition of any supplement or over-the-counter item.

  • Q:

What is the dose per pound?
Asked on 12/21/2013 by peggy from Dahlonega, GA, United States

    1 answer

    • A:

      Peggy,

For the Pro-Pectalin tablets, 1 tablet should be given per 20 pounds of body weight, every 8 hours, and if improvement is not noted with 24 to 48 hours, the pet should be reevaluated by the veterinarian. The tablet may be administered whole or crushed and mixed with a small amount of food.

When administering the gel, the following dosage should be followed:
      For dogs:
under 10 lbs - 1 cc or mL every 8 hours
      11 to 30 lbs - 3 cc or mL every 8 hours
      30 to 60 lbs - 5 cc or mL every 8 hours
over 60 lbs - 8 cc or mL every 8 hours
      For Cats:
1 cc or mL every 8 hours

      Thank you,

Comments about Vetoquinol Pro-Pectalin:

Our elderly dog has multiple end of life issues. Diarrhea is one of them. Feeding him Pro-Pectalin daily has helped control the diarrhea in a safe way. And he loves the taste of the chewable tablets.

Poor Customer Service

Comments about Vetoquinol Pro-Pectalin:

Hello,
I ordered this product for my cat who has had diarrhea for several months following a move to a new home and the stress of a now mobile toddler. The product took a very long time to arrive which is not a huge problem itself, but wish it would have been expressed clearly before ordering. After feeding my cat the 1/2 a pill he threw up about an hour later. I tried once more 8 hours later thinking maybe he just had a hair ball or something and he threw up again. I realize spending $50 on a product that may not work is a risk, and one that I was willing to take. In order to learn more about what happened and ask for advice, I shared my experience in an email to the team (email address I had used before to follow up on arrival date, so I know they received it). See below. I do not understand why they have not replied and it seems they only care about selling their product versus having any interest in my experience with their product or about my cats health.

Hello,

I was hoping you could help me with some advice about my order. The Pro-Pectalin arrived yesterday and I gave my cat 1/2 a pill (he weights 13lbs), he threw it up with his food about a half hour later. Since I wasn?t sure if it was the probiotics or not I hesitantly tried again 8 hours later, same result.

Have you heard of this happening? I?m just so bummed. My cat?s had persistent diarrhea for some time now and read so many good reviews on how this product would help. Not to mention the cost. He did enjoy the taste and gobbled it right down.

Thanks for any advice
Lisa Mullen

Big Help

Comments about Vetoquinol Pro-Pectalin:

Our German Shepherd dog was stricken with a life threatening systemic fungal infection. After a year of treatment she miraculously survived. However, she is unable to take steroids or other immunosuppressant medications to control her Irritable Bowel Syndrome. She can take Pro-Pectalin on a daily basis to help control her symptoms without dangerous side-effects. It's not 100% effective, but has worked well enough that she has finally put on much needed weight so she looks like a normal dog instead of a starved famine victim. Thank you Pro-Pectalin for helping our dog cope better with her chronic illness!

Comments about Vetoquinol Pro-Pectalin:

My Chihuahua's all get upset tummy's every now and then. In fact, just the other day, my female would not eat her food and her stomach was making so much noise, I felt so sorry for her. I gave her a little of the Pro-Pectalin and within an hour, the noises stopped and she ate her food.

Comments about Vetoquinol Pro-Pectalin:

I can't believe the prices that vets charge for this product after reading other reviews. My vet charged $20 for 60 tablets. It saved my dog with her diarrhea and so glad to find this product online. My dog eats the pills like a treat. Vet RX Direct made the transaction very easy and I received the product very quickly with a little personal "thank you" note. I will absolutely use them again! Thanks, Vet RX Direct.

Comments about Vetoquinol Pro-Pectalin:

Our dog has had chronic diarrhea for several years - first as a side-effects from anti-fungal medication and now from irritable bowel syndrome. These tablets are safe for her to take every day and help with symptoms. She can leave home for a walk without worry about loose stools that cannot be cleaned up. She seems to have less gastric distress in general. They don't cure her, but do a very good job controlling her symptoms that had kept her (and us) from enjoying life.
