PrednisTab (prednisolone) Tablets for Dogs and Cats

Prednisolone is a medication used for many conditions in many species. Prednisolone is a corticosteroid that is similar to prednisone. Prednisolone is the active component that prednisone is converted to by the liver. Horses, cats, and pets with liver failure will need to be given prednisolone instead of prednisone to achieve the desired treatment because they are unable to convert prednisone efficiently to prednisolone. In order to have the best treatment possible for you cat, prednisolone should be considered. Cats cannot convert prednisone completely to prednisolone, so only part of the dose is able to exert its effect.

Often the goal when using prednisolone is similar to prednisone. When using prednisolone, veterinarians want to use the least amount of medication needed to effectively treat your pet. This medication is often used to treat inflammation, to suppress the immune system, to replace or supplement adrenal insufficient animals, or to inhibit the growth or spread of tumors.

Adverse Effects

  • growth retardation in growing animals

  • increased thirst

  • increased urination

  • increased appetite and weight gain

  • increase in blood sugars

Talk with your pet's veterinarian regarding side effects related to the strength of prednisolone prescribed and length of treatment.

It is important to give your pet this medication exactly as prescribed and to not discontinue the drug without consulting with your pet's veterinarian. If you miss giving your pet the dose, give it to him as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal schedule. If you are unsure about when to give a missed dose, contact your pet's veterinarian.

Comments about Phoenix PrednisTab (Prednisolone):

These Pred tabs are such a great price. The vet charges are crazy for this, and you can not get them from regular drug stores. The size is small and easy to give with a pill pocket, yet they are scored and split nicely for a half tab. Fast shipping too.

Comments about Phoenix PrednisTab (Prednisolone):

This is a steroid product, and shouldn't be administered to pets for long periods of time. My cat was sick all the time with it, which defeated its purpose. Once taken off this medication, she stopped throwing up, and became more social and cat-like.

Comments about Phoenix PrednisTab (Prednisolone):

These 5 mg pills are oblong and scored in the middle so they can be easily broken in half. The pill is very small so my cat swallows the piece willingly (as long as I get it to the back of her throat.)

Helps my cat's IBD!

Comments about Phoenix PrednisTab (Prednisolone):

I have been using prednisolone tabs for my cat for a few years now because my vet prescribed it for his irritable bowel disease/syndrome. This product has helped his symptoms immensely. The folks at VetRx Direct are very helpful and are careful to ensure that I receive prednisolone, not prednisone. There is a difference in how these 2 drugs are metabolized in the cat's body, so it's very important to me that I receive the correct drug. I have found that other companies are not as careful, reliable and knowledgable as VetRx Direct about this important difference (and VetRx is much less expensive for this product than other online companies).

It's Prednisolone?..

Comments about Phoenix PrednisTab (Prednisolone):

My cat has been on Prednisolone for sometime now. In the past I bought the pills that my Vet provided me. My cat fights me a lot more with these pills than the others as it must taste worse. Same method & process of giving him the pills as before. The price is what attracted me to these pills. Otherwise, it's Prednisolone and helping my Cat with him urinary symptoms.

Good med - supplies are inconsistent

Comments about Phoenix PrednisTab (Prednisolone):

Prednisolone is a more bioavailable form of steroid for our pets than regular prednisone, so I feel better about using for my animals. This tablet is easy to break in half and is small, so easy to give. However, right now it is not being manufactured and is very hard to find. VetRxDirect has been out of it for months (not their fault) and my vet is rationing their supply - plus it costs me a lot more at my vet. The prices at VetRx are very reasonable. I wish that pharmacies could put pressure on the manufacturer to continue producing this medication. Four stars because of issues with availability.
