Ketoconazole (Generic) Antifungal Tablets and Cream for Dogs and Cats

Ketoconazole is commonly used to treat systemic fungal infections and can also be used to reduce the doses and costs of cyclosporine treatment by interfering with cyclosporine drug metabolism. Treatment may be required for a longer period of time to get rid of the fungal infection. Ketoconazole may also reduce the synthesis of the male hormone testosterone. As a result, infertility may result from ketoconazole therapy in male dogs.

Adverse Effects:

  • Vomiting
  • Anorexia
  • Diarrhea
  • Reversible lightening of hair

Side effects may be reduced if giving ketoconazole in divided doses or with meals. Talk to your pet's veterinarian before changing any aspect of your pet’s medication regimen.

When given at lower concentrations for shorter periods of time, ketoconazole may only inhibit the growth of the fungus and not kill the fungus. It is necessary to use the dosing regimen prescribed by your pet's veterinarian to obtain optimal therapy. At higher doses, ketoconazole acts as a fungicidal agent which will kill the fungus.

Ketoconazole may also interact with other medications. Talk to your pet's veterinarian today regarding any medications, supplements, or herbal products you may be giving your pet. If your pet requires antacids, administer ketoconazole 1 hour before or at least 2 hours after giving an antacid. (i.e. omeprazole, ranitidine, etc.)

It is important to give your pet this medication exactly as prescribed and to not discontinue the drug without consulting with the veterinarian. If you miss giving your pet the dose, give it to him as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal schedule. If you are unsure about when to give a missed dose, contact your pet's veterinarian.
