Hydroxyzine is commonly used as an antihistamine, anti-itch and sedative product for pets. Conditions for use may include allergic reactions or hypersensitivity reactions that may or may not have been in contact with an allergen. This drug has been used in dogs, cats, ferrets, horses, and birds, and can be found in many dosage forms.
After giving your pet a dose, hydroxyzine can last for 6-8 hours in dogs and up to 12 hours in cats. The most common adverse effect seen in pets is sedation. Sometimes, this medication can have the opposite effect and lead to excitability. Rarely, dogs may get tremors and cats may become thirsty or develop behavioral changes. If you miss giving your pet the dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal schedule. Do not double up on doses.
