IMPORTANT: DO NOT SPRAY FELIWAY ON CATS.

What can I do if the cat continues to scratch my furniture?

Despite the best of plans and the finest of scratching posts, some cats may continue to scratch or climb in inappropriate areas. In these cases, the first step is to determine whether the scratching is excessive and whether anxiety is a factor. Scratching of new areas and sites may be related to anxiety and marking behavior. Sometimes, the scratching problem is related to a change in the household such as the introduction of a new cat, moving or a change in the family's schedule. Other signs of anxiety such as a change in appetite, a change in social behavior (e.g. more aggressive or more withdrawn), or the onset of urine marking may also occur. When, where and how often the cat scratches might be a clue as to the possible cause. If the cat is not satisfied to scratch in one or two selected areas, then look at the environmental and household factors that might lead to anxiety. If the cat scratches new objects or furniture in the home, this might be a marking behavior. Cats that scratch in a particular room or on a particular person's possessions may have a relationship problem that might need to be resolved. Providing the cat with a more enriched daily routine, including multiple feeding sessions, additional opportunities for social / predatory play, and new objects to manipulate and explore, may help to better settle the cat at times when it might otherwise be scratching. In addition to determining the cause and trying to resolve the underlying anxiety, the feline facial pheromone FeliwayTM may be useful to reduce marking when sprayed on the inappropriate locations (but should not be used to deter normal marking of preferred scratching sites).

If the scratching is not anxiety related, but the targets of scratching are undesirable for the owner, a little time, effort, and ingenuity might be necessary. The first thing to consider is partial confinement or "cat-proofing" your home when you are not around to supervise. If the problem occurs in a few rooms, consider making them out of bounds by closing off a few doors or by using child-proofing techniques such as child locks or barricades. The cat may even have to be kept in a single room that has been effectively cat proofed whenever the owner cannot supervise. Of course the cat's scratching post, play center, toys, and litter box should be located in this cat-proof room.

If cat-proofing is not possible or the cat continues to use one or two pieces of furniture, you might want to consider moving the furniture, or placing a scratching post directly in front of the furniture that is being scratched. Take a good look at the surfaces of the scratched furniture and ensure that the surface of the post is covered with a material similar to those for which the cat has shown a preference. Some scratching posts are even designed to be wall mounted or hung on doors. Placing additional scratching posts in strategic areas may also be helpful for some cats. Another option is to try using a feline facial scent on scratched surfaces. This may help to reduce scratching at these sites but the cat will still need alternate areas to scratch. Keeping the cat's nails properly trimmed or using commercially available plastic nail covers are also useful techniques for some owners.

I've cleaned up the spot but the cat keeps returning to spray. What else can be done to reduce the problem?

Since the "purpose" of spraying is to mark an area with urine odor, it is not surprising that, as the odor is cleaned up, the cat wants to refresh the area with more urine. Cleaning alone does little to reduce spraying.

"Cats that mark in one or two particular areas may cease if the function of the area is changed."

Cats that mark in one or two particular areas may cease if the function of the area is changed. It is unlikely that cats will spray in their feeding, sleeping or scratching areas. It has also been shown that cats that mark an area with cheek glands are less likely to mark in other ways such as with urine. In fact it might be said that cats that use their cheek glands are marking in a more calm, familiar manner while those that urine mark are doing so in a more reactive, anxious manner. A commercial product containing synthetic cheek gland scent (Feliway®) has proven to be an effective way of reducing urine marking in some cats. When sprayed on areas where cats have sprayed urine or on those areas where it can be anticipated that the cat is likely to spray, it may decrease the likelihood of additional spraying in those areas. The use of feline facial pheromone may stimulate cheek gland marking (bunting), rather than urine spraying. It is available as a room diffuser that covers about 700 square feet for cats marking multiple sites or as a spray to be used directly at the area where your cat sprays. It has also been used to calm cats in new environments, including the veterinary hospital and to help familiarize the cat with a new cage or cat carrier.

Where practical, a good compromise for some cats is to allow them one or two areas for marking. This can be done by placing a shower curtain on the vertical surface, tiling the area, or by taking two plastic litter boxes and placing one inside the other to make an L-shape (with the upright surface to catch the marked urine). Another option is to place booby traps in the sprayed areas; but with this option, spraying of another area may then develop.

FELIWAY® ELECTRIC DIFFUSER

Ceva Animal Health

The secret to happy cats

When a cat feels safe in its environment, it rubs its head against the furniture, the corners of walls or the bottom of the curtains, leaving substances called facial pheromones. These pheromones convey a message of well-being, calm and absence of stress.

When there are changes in the cat's environment (such as visits to the veterinarian, return from hospitalization, moving to a new home, new arrivals, rearrangement of furniture), or if the cat is scared, a state of unrest or stress may develop. This state can be conveyed by changes in behavior, such as urine marking, vertical scratching, loss of appetite, or refusal to play and interact.

In these situations, FELIWAY Diffuser can be used to restore the natural balance. FELIWAY Diffuser mimics the cat's facial pheromones, creating a state of well-being and calm.

FELIWAY® PHEROMONE SPRAY

Ceva Animal Health

COMPOSITION

Analogue of Feline Facial Pheromones

10%

Ethanol (90%)

77.6%

Excipients to

75 mL

PROPERTIES

This innovative and patented product has some of the properties of feline facial pheromones. Pheromones are chemical substances secreted by animals to confirm their territory and to communicate with others.

The cat usually uses facial pheromones to familiarize itself with its environment. Surfaces that have been marked with these pheromones are recognized by the cat as familiar and comforting. Facial pheromones are deposited by rubbing the object with the side of the face. (Figure 1).

Figure 1: Facial marking

Among other properties, facial pheromones will inhibit urinary marking when applied to an area.

The posture adopted for urine marking is shown in Figure 2. The marking involves a well recognized behavioral sequence where the cat: selects a vertical surface, paws at the ground, turns its back to the surface, lifts its tail to a vertical position while remaining standing, sprays the surface with a horizontal jet of urine.

Figure 2: Urine marking

The cat will perform this behavioral sequence of urine marking: during a period of sexual activity, following an event that changes its environment (new arrival: human or animal, new object or new furniture, new house or vacations, or any other event perceived by the cat as stressful).

Urine marks produced in this way are characterized by a strong smell, even though the quantity of urine deposited each time is usually small, and they are found at about 20 cm (8 in) above the floor.

USES

To stop or to prevent urinary marking and scratching by the cat. To comfort the cat in an unknown or stressful environment (cage, car, boarding, new house, etc.).

FELIWAY may be used in other specific cases and we advise you to discuss the use of the product with your veterinarian.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

DO NOT SPRAY FELIWAY ON ANIMALS.

1) To stop urine marking - FELIWAY should be sprayed directly onto the places soiled by the cat and also on prominent objects that could be attractive to the cat (Figure 3). A single dose (one depression of the nozzle) should be applied daily at about 10 cm (4 in) from the site, keeping the bottle vertical. The spray should be applied at a height of about 20 cm (8 in) from the floor.

Maintenance treatment of each site is recommended once weekly after the cat is observed rubbing the site with its head and marking it with its own facial pheromones (Figure 1). Where this is not observed, treatment should be continued for 1 month.

The method of use should be modified in the following circumstances:

Sexually excited cats: When a male cat is marking in response to the presence of a female in heat (this is usually accompanied by continual calling), it is not necessary to apply FELIWAY on all prominent objects that could be attractive to the cat. In this case, it is usually sufficient to apply FELIWAY only to the places marked, which are usually near doors and windows.

Multiple cat households: The risk of urine marking is greater when several cats are present in a household. The application of FELIWAY should be increased to two or three times per day on marked sites and once a day on prominent objects that could be attractive to the cat (Figure 3).

Elderly cats: With elderly cats, FELIWAY may need to be used for 45 days in the manner described for multiple cat households, then once every 2 - 3 days for as long as necessary.

Figure 3: Examples of prominent objects

Important: The use of many cleaning agents and disinfectants will increase the likelihood of urine marking by the cat. It is essential that the soiled sites are not cleaned with bleaches or detergents or their derivatives.

2) To prevent urine marking - In order to prevent urine marking by a cat (new house, boarding, etc.).

FELIWAY should be sprayed once per day on prominent objects that could be attractive to the cat (Figure 3).

One depression of the nozzle should be used about 10 cm (4 in) from the object at a height of 20 cm (8 in) from the floor.

3) To familiarize a cat in a new environment - For transport in a cage, spray the inside of the cage with FELIWAY about 20 minutes before introducing the cat.

For transport in a car or other vehicle, spray 3 - 4 times around the cat's usual place in the vehicle before placing the cat in it.

When boarding, spray each corner of the cattery accommodation before introducing the cat. Repeat the sprays daily until the cat is observed to rub its head in the areas of the sprays.

4) To prevent or stop scratching - Scratching is part of territory marking in its strictest sense. Like urine marking, scratching deposits both visible and pheromone-based territorial marks. The pheromones are released from the pads under the cat's paws onto the scratched surface.

Feliway should be sprayed once per day on areas or surfaces that could be attractive to the cat (typically surfaces that are fully visible and vertical).

One depression of the nozzle should be used about 10 cm (4 in) from the area at a height of 20 cm (8 in) from the floor.

PRECAUTIONS AND WARNINGS

The product should not stain or mark. Nevertheless, owing to the wide variety of materials used in household furnishings, we advise that you should test the product on a sample that is not easily visible prior to using it.

For best results the product should be allowed to come up to room temperature by leaving it in the room for about 1 hour before using it and it should be shaken prior to use.

CAUTION, FLAMMABLE, EYE IRRITANT - Keep away from sources of ignition. Avoid contact with eyes. Avoid breathing vapor or mist.

KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN

Keep container tightly closed. Store at room temperature.

PACKAGE SIZE
