EasOtic contains hydrocortisone, miconazole, and gentamicin (steroid, antifungal, and antibiotic). Per the package insert of EasOtic, aminoglycoside antibiotics (gentamicin) are associated with ototoxicity (ear toxicity). The use of EasOtic suspension in a dog with a damaged tympanic membrane can result in damage to the structures of the ear associated with hearing and balance or in transmission of the infection to the middle or inner ear. It is recommended to immediately discontinue the use of EasOtic suspension if hearing loss or signs of balance dysfunction are observed during treatment.
There have been reports of hearing loss and redness to the application site. In most reported cases, the hearing loss and redness were short acting and resolved with discontinuation of EasOtic suspension. Please contact your veterinarian to report the situation and to see if drug discontinuation is necessary.
Can you go over the 5 days of treatment if you don't think the ear infection is completely gone? Are there any side effects for the dog to do so?
EasOtic is a combination of hydrocortisone, gentamicin, and miconazole (a steroid, antibiotic, and antifungal). There are possible side effects associated with all of these drugs to be aware of and avoid. However, we also want to make sure the infection is completely cleared to avoid further problems for your dog as well as antibiotic resistance from stopping too early. At this time it is best to discuss this with your dog's veterinarian to decide if further treatment is necessary.
