Doxycycline Tablets for Pets

Doxycycline is a semi-synthetic tetracycline antibiotic prescribed to treat various bacterial infections such as urinary tract and bladder infections. Veterinarians also use Doxycycline to treat some diseases such as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme disease.

  • Effective treatment for bacterial infections in dogs
  • Used to treat Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and chlamydia
  • Small capsules for easy dosing

Veterinarians prescribe Doxycycline because it’s a strong, effective antibiotic with extended effectiveness against some diseases. Your dog may take Doxycycline to treat a short-term bacterial infection such as a urinary tract or bladder infection. Or your pet's veterinarian may recommend Doxycycline to treat a longer-term disease such as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Lyme Disease, Ehrlichiosis, or chlamydia.  This medication prevents bacteria from reproducing so the animal’s immune system can fight the existing infection. Talk to your pet's veterinarian about the proper way to dose Doxycycline to avoid potential side effects.

What you should know about Doxycycline tablets:

  • Talk to your pet's veterinarian before using this product.
  • Follow dosing directions exactly - don’t give your pet more medication than directed and don’t skip doses.
  • Read the label carefully for information about storage, possible side effects, and drug interactions.

For additional information about Doxycycline click the “More Information” and “Package Insert” tabs above.

Resistance is a major concern when giving antibiotics. Resistance occurs when bacteria survive and mutate and are then able to survive even after antibiotics are given. To help avoid any resistance, it is important to give antibiotics as they are prescribed for as long as they are prescribed even if your pet is looking and feeling better.

    1 answer

    • A:

Doxycycline is an antibiotic that is used to treat infections that are caused by bronchitis in dogs. Your dog’s veterinarian(s) most likely determined that an infection in your dog's airways exist and an antibiotic is necessary to treat this infection. Once the infection is treated, coughing caused by this flare up will most likely be reduced. If coughing is still present after the drug therapy is finished please follow up with the veterinarian. Duration of therapy can range between 2 weeks to 3 months depending on the type and severity of infection. The determining factors for choosing a compounded product over a commercially-available product will be dose and dosage form availability. VetRxDirect carries doxycycline 20mg, 50mg, and 100mg commericially-available tablet/capsule strengths. Side effects to monitor while on this medication are vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss. Giving the medication with food may help reduce the GI adverse effects. Please give us a call if you have any further questions.

As to your questions regarding cost, all doxycycline is sold per tablet or per capsule, so you can order the amount that the veterinarian has prescribed, which will vary depending on the duration of therapy and the necessary dose.

how do i know the right dosage she is 60 lbs and how many pills will i need
Asked on 12/29/2013 by maryann from nj

    1 answer

    • A:

      Maryann,

As doxycycline is a prescription medication, it will be up to your pet's veterinarian to determine the appropriate dose and the duration of therapy. Once the veterinarian has made that determination, you may place your order through the website, and we will fax the veterinarian for approval of the medication. If your pet's veterinarian issues you a written prescription, you may also mail that to us.

      Thank you,

Hello, Is there 50 or 1 in bottle.
    Asked on 8/9/2013 by Andrew

    1 answer

    • A:

      Andrew,

Doxycycline Tablets, like most bottles of generic drugs, are sold and priced per pill and dispensed out of bulk bottles.

VetRxDirect dispenses many generic drugs into blue drug vials with proper prescription drug labeling. Our vials have a dog and cat image on the lid to prevent confusion with your prescription meds.

      Thank you,

      VetRxDirect

WHAT disgustingly stubborn sinus infection?

Comments about Putney Doxycycline Hyclate Tablet:

I cannot count how many times this Rx has been filled and refilled for my 18-year-old-(ish), and STILL, every time, the infection disappears almost overnight. Very gratifying to watch Poor Kitty sneeze without gobs of goo flying everywhere! According to my vet, some of the more stubborn cases never really go, they just go dormant for a couple of weeks, or months, only to return with an attitude! Good old Doxycycline! It's keeping our Little Big Man a happy youngster, if not a little obnoxious... we've already received the antibiotics via Mail Order Vet, crushed a quarter of a pill, and got it down the Leader of The Pack, who then swallowed both pills! Success!
