The DogLeggs’ Carpal Support brace provides a stabilization solution for dogs of all sizes with joint weakness, arthritis or deformity. The DogLeggs’ Carpal Support alone provides a moderate to medium level of support for the carpus (wrist).
Careful consideration should be made for animals that are palmer, when the carpal pad is on or very near the ground, especially larger breeds. Also, consideration should be made as to the suitability of the Carpal Support vs. a ridged brace or hinged orthotic.
Several styles of DogLeggs Carpal Support provide a range of support levels.
DogLeggs Carpal support - used mostly for carpal hyperextension and arthritis, when a moderate support is appropriate, while still allowing for some flexion of the carpal joint- available on this VetRxDirect product page.
DogLeggs Carpal support with extra stabilization strap – used for more severe hyperextension, joint deformities, degenerative joint disease or other situations where a firmer support is needed while still allowing for slight flexion of the carpal joint- available at the manufacturer's website.
DogLeggs Carpal support with Orthoplast Splinting Kit – used for more severe hyperextension, joint deformities, degenerative joint disease or other situations where a very firmer support is needed, and very limited flexion of the carpal joint- available at the manufacturer's website.
Final size of the DogLeggs Carpal Support
The standard DogLeggs’ Carpal Support will be about 3 inches wider than the #1 measurement and about two times the #2 measurement in height. For example, the measurements for #1 of 6” and #2 of 3.25” would result in a Carpal Support of approximately 9” wide and 6.5” tall.
The added 3 inches in width allows for about 1.5 inches of overlap and adjustment of the product when placed on the animal. The DogLeggs’ Carpal Support will extend above the carpal joint the same distance as from top of paw at metacarpal joint to middle of carpal joint.

Why do we require a prescription?
Because the DogLeggs' Carpal Support brace will affect the movement, gait and joint mobility of the animal, a veterinarian must be an active partner in the relationship between this DogLeggs' product, the dog's healing process and you, the dog's caretaker.
A prescription authoriaztion request form will be faxed to your dog's veterinarian after you place your online order. This process is detailed in our FAQ page:
Why do we ask the health questions?
Each of the conditions we ask about create an environment where the skin of the animal breaks down quickly if rubbed by a product. The answers affect our choice of appropriate product design and size of product.

Indications for use include:
Carpal support can be challenging. Proper fit and function relies on a product that will consider the tapered shape of the forelimb and the bony prominences/structure of the carpus. The DogLeggs’ Carpal Support is not just a simple cylinder. It is made to the specific measurements of the patient and the material conforms to the limb, which allows for an intimate fit. The DogLeggs’ Carpal Support provides mild to moderate support of the carpal joint. For additional support, the Extra Stabilization Strap may be added. If rigid support is needed, Orthoplast™ may be molded and applied to the Carpal Support. The standard Carpal Support length is double the length from mid carpus to top of paw, however, if a longer support is desired, please provide these additional measurements: a) Top of paw to top of carpal support and b) Circumference of the limb at the proximal aspect of the carpal support.
For chondrodystrophic dogs or patients suffering from an angular limb deformity in need of joint support, our Carpal Support can be further customized. A mold of the limb is made from a casting you perform. The Carpal Support is then literally sculpted to the mold providing an intimate fit and proper support. Casting kits may be purchased from DogLeggs.
For patients with a compromised immune system or fragile skin, our Carpal Support can be lined. Lining is recommended for any patient with Cushing’s Disease, Addison’s Disease, an auto-immune disorder, skin allergies or those on chemotherapy, long term steroid therapy or other immune suppressive therapy.
Lining is also recommended for young patients and/or patients who participate in sports (agility, hunting, etc) or is a working K-9.
The DogLeggs’ Carpal Support is available by prescription only and we recommend it be applied by the veterinary professional to ensure proper placement.
